Take a look at the nikon afs-dx 35mm 1.8 prime lens gives app 50mm focal length on a dx camera, its pin sharp and probably nikons least expensive lens about £150.00 in the uk. You will need to zoom with your feet though but the quality is there.

I have the Nikon D7000 and the Nikon D300 and have problems with Tamron lenses on these cameras. All of these cameras mentioned above have a focus motor. I get a letter "F" in the panel and have to take it off and put it back on again and hopefully it will take the picture
