I use a Wacom tablet a lot. I do illustrating as well as photography. If you give yourself a good two week trial with the tablet, you will certainly know if it is right for you. If you are searching for the type of tablet that is also a draw-on monitor, then the Wacom Cintique is what you are looking for. Hardly anyone has them in there shop so you can see one in action though. Wacom just brought down the price for the 12" one - cost approx.$700.00. They use to be over $1,200.

Do you know of a place where they would let me tr it?

The problem is that there are not many of the units sold, so only the high-end art stores and photography places would have one. There are only two places in San Francisco that have them set up, but you are on the East Coast. You may want to contact Wacom and find out. You shouldn't have any problem getting use to a tablet if you do artwork already.

Is there a reason you don't just get a Wacom 4 or 5 tablet and use your own monitor? They are much more affordable. I have purchased tablets for both my son and daughter an they use theirs with a laptop. One of them in 1st year college and is majoring in media graphics, the other is in high school. They are both proficient with them.

I find it much more accurate than trying to do some things with a mouse.

Well, I would like to be able to use it in places that don't have wifi.So would need something that is self-inclusive. I saw one on the Internet ( http://www.newtabletgraphics.com/db101u.html ).
Have you heard anything about this one?

I also use the wacom intuos 4 medium and haven't used a mouse in about 7 years.

I also have the bamboo tablets in my laptop bags.

It does take time to get used to the pen.....once you get used to it, the mouse is gone!!

I do lots of concept drawing and would never be able to do this with accuracy and ease with a mouse.

Also, the pen is more natural...and the mouse can create wrist and forearm problems.

I think Pearl is still on Rt 17.....only down closer to rt4 (on the northbound side).
Pearl in NY might be better....but I'm going to call Blick Art Supplies (Paramus, in 35 Plaza,rt 4 westbound)....they are kind of new but big.

You could be right about Pearl moving, I used to buy my airbrush supplies from them, but mostly in the NY store, wifey works practically around the corner, so I make a day of it along with B&H, Adorama, can make for an expensive trip. Never been to Blick, Don't know if you remember Glick Art supplies in Englewood years ago, just south of Palisades ave....they were the best in Jersey.

You don't need wifi. The ones I have for my kids and myself are USB. The stylus doesn't require batteries either. Look on Ebay. You could get a deal price from someone who just didn't get use to a tablet - or didn't really need one.

My son is a budding artist and absolutely loves it. It is a lot less expensive than a Wacom, he has one of those too and likes the Monoprice one better. This one does not allow you to draw directly on the image on the tablet screen, rather you use the stylus on the tablet surface and see the image and results on the monitor.

I went to their site and I talked with a cust. service agent. It seems that it must be used with a PC. I need a tablet that I can use on its own (in places with no PC). But thanx anyway.

As far as try before you buy,of course you can't take it home yet Best Buy allows checking them out while you are there. You can purchase them and if you do not like , return within 30 days yet if you have a rewards card you have 45 days to return. That is the only way I know.

I want to be able to work on photos in places that do not have a computer (or my monitor).
Since I never used a tablet be4, I don't even know if that's possible.

I've use for over 5 years the Wacom DTZ-1200W and LOVE IT !!!!!
Best purchase I've ever made. I've tried all types and kinds of mouses and I haven't found one that will allow you the control that a tablet gives.
Before I purchase the current one I tried the NON-viewing tablets and the coordination was difficult. Now I can apply the pen directly on the image and have perfect positioning for any and all adjustments. The tablet also calibrates quite nicely and the pressure sensativity feature is great.
I'd love to upgrade to the 24" version, I just can't justify the cost.
