I know many of you here keep at least UV filters on some if not all your lens. The questions is how does the "magic dust" get inside the filter even tho you hardly ever take it off. Has any of you gotten dust on the inside of your filters and not wonder where and how it go in there?

Nope, never wondered that because I've never had it....... In fact, this is the first time to hear about it....

I can think of only one way...
What do you use to clean your lenses and filters?
If it happens to be with a cloth that is NOT anti-static, dust would fly to the just cleaned surface the moment you pull your cleaning cloth away.

Esther, OP is saying the dust is between his filter and lens.

What type of lens?...Most zoom lenses "suck" air in as you zoom. Don't know how that would get between a filter & the front element though...That little bit of dust will have a negligible impact on your images though...Don't worry about it...

Yes, I saw that. And when the filter has been off the lens and cleaned, while it is being put back on, the dust could very quickly fly back to the inside of the filter.
I've had it happen, but found that the lenspen and/or antistatic lenscloth prevented the outside of the lens or inside of the filter attracting fresh dust.

I think EstherP has nailed it. Particularly in winter, static can be more of a problem than might be imagined. Antistatic microfiber clothes are invaluable!

Yup...static....aka dust magnet. Also look at the back of your lens cap before you put it back on your clean lens. I wonder if there is a way to demagnetize your lens front element.

Tiger, my Canon 100-400 has several shovels full of magic dust inside it. Well, not really sure if it's magic or not.
Most filters are not sealed. And even if they were, there is usually no provision to seal between the lens and the filter. That said, Canon super teles provide for sealing when a sealed filter is installed. this will keep that magic dust out of the lens and camera.
But wouldn't we want magic dust in all of our lenses ?!

Plus the OP said, "hardly ever take it off."
If you ever take it off the dust will come.

Never had that problem. Could quality of filter ring be an issue?

Many non-pro grade lenses "breathe" through a microscopic gap between the front element and the front bezel. If dust appears between the filter and the front element, that dust has usually travelled through the lens from the rear mount or via the zoom or focus ring.

If you don't put filters on your lenses you won't have this problem.
