I was never satisfied with the results of the 100mm 2.8 telephoto. The depth of field was a bit on the shallow side. The question might be: "How close do you want to photograph?"
"Never satisfied" in what way? At MFD, all macro lenses have a shallow DoF, even at f/16.
Minimum Working Distance of a 100-mm lens is quite close to 150-mm (5.9-inches).
Correct. It is fixed focus, not a telephoto, but is a long lens.

Which macro lens has fixed focus? On an APS-C camera, any FX (or full frame) lens longer than about 35-mm can be considered as telephoto, be it short tele, mid tele, or long tele. A prime lens has a fixed focal length, while a zoom lens has variable focal length. Do not confuse the term focus to mean focal length, nor the term telephoto to mean zoom.

It is not a fixed focus lens.
From your own reference: "Convenient Tele-Macro Focal Length" under Product Highlights. Tele-Macro means dual purpose.
What about the Canon Macro EF-S 60mm 1:2.8 USM lens?

A good macro lens. No telephoto capability.
A true macro, with portrait capabilities.
