Sure. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens is a superb performer and also makes an excellent portrait lens (dual uses!).
You cannot go wrong with this quality work horse, and it has great resale value too!

Also check out the reviews. You don't get 4.8 out of 5.0 with over 680 photographer reviews on many products. This one is a solid winner.
For another $400 you can get the model with IS (image stabilization). That is more a matter of what you shoot, how you shoot, and your budget.

A 4.9 out of 5.0 user review score from over 1,032 buyers. An even more impressive lens - but the same glass and specs, just that the IS has its advantages...

I would suggest buying the best one your bank account can afford.....and start from there. Also look into macro lighting....you'll need it I'm sure.

Canon macros are superb lenses. There is no doubt.

Several Canon macro-photographers on UHH successfully use excellent macro lenses by Sigma (105-mm) & Tokina (100-mm), which are more affordable, yet yield near-identical results.

Thank you all. Have some research to do! Tamron 90mm was suggested to me, so wanted to see what most of you suggested. Thanks again for the input.

I looked at the lot before I bought my Tamron 90mm, which I am very happy with. Maybe not a 'big name' lens, but it is very sharp & the price won't send you bankrupt.

I have the Canon 100mm macro. It's an exceptional lens, both for macro and portraits.

I shoot Nikon and have the 105mm f2.8 and I'd highly recommend the Canon equivalent. As stated it's great for both macro and portraits.

Can someone tell me please, how well does the canon 100mm macro function as a portrait lens on a crop camera, in my case the 7D?

I have the older version of the Sigma 105. 2.8 for my Canon 60 D, Would love the updated version but can't afford it. Go with your bank balance, but try it out in a shop and get the feel of it.

Agree 100% with the Canon 100 2.8 macro lens comments..I have an older one and it is my favorite lens. Have not used it for portrait although the reports are positive. It is one of Canons sharpest lenses.
I bought it on Craigs list and was able to try it out first. I realize my comment is redundant, but man, I love that lens.
