I don't buy the phrase "Entry Level Cameras" only entry level photographers. Put an "Entry Level" camera in the hands of a great photographer and a top of the line $4000 all the bells and whistles camera in the hands of a novice and guess who's gonna get the best shot?
The camera is merely a tool that allows the artist to create. You'll probably find that some of your finest shots are the ones you didn't use all the bells and whistles.
Definitely lens distortion. You were way too close. You can actually see this happening in your veiwfinder. Most any lens will do this if you get close than it's normal field of view. The image begins to take on the curvature of the lens. T
