Thanks John and thanks again to all who have commented. The first shot, taken from a high elevation rest stop, is of a lake that is perhaps a half mile across at its widest point. The little gray clumps in the foreground are full grown sage brush. If you zoom in and look closely you can see the small town of Coulee City far off in the distance at the top of the frame.
I did notice the town in the background, it was the lack of anything in the foreground that was messing with my head.
Now that you explain the vantage point it makes sense to me. I thought it was most likely a lake.
Interesting that the bigger lake froze, but the smaller one didn't.
