Happy to report that I got some really nice ducks in flight
after my duck shoot yesterday. I ended up going manual
at 1/1000; AF-C; 9 focus points, f 6.4; auto ISO.

On Nikon 80-40 zoom lens - Am; Full; VR on; Norm
Most flying shots were at 30-40 yds; sunny day; lens
usually at 135mm so I could pick up the birds in the
view finder. Some water shots went to full zoom at 400mm.

I wish to thank those on this forum who helped me get
going. Steep learning curve for sure. I think I'm going
to really enjoy doing this now. I'm 80 yrs old, began with
a Nikon F in 1960. Never did I dream that cameras would
ever become so perfect as to capture these kinds of pictures.

I hope this inspires others to go after nature pics without being
intimidated by "experts" who want to make it all seem so hard.
Stay with it. Ugly Hedgehog was there for me when I needed them.

Thank you,

Good advice.
But I find that instant gratification takes too long.

Thanks. We have much in common.
So exposure is trial and error?
Play with the ISO? Cloudy day ISO 800?
Sunny day ISO 300?
What do I set the dial at on the D7500?

If I have trees behind the duck should I use perhaps 9 focus points and pray I get a centered bird?
Thanks

Camera is Nikon D7500. I'll try A/M
I used 51 focus points. I had to back away from 400 mm in order
to capture the ducks in the viewfinder. Went to 300 mm.
Thanks

No. Didn't realize I had it on manual and birds were too fast to do that anyway.
Would you choose Ma or Am on the lens?

On lens settings there are Am, Ma, and M. If you have it on M (manual) does that override all the main camera
settings? Must be since my first trial after December Idaho duck hunt shoot resulted in all blurred images.

My camera settings were Af-C, 51 focus points, shutter priority, speed 1/2000; Ch;
Aperture was often showing f9.

Temp that day way 19 deg F overcast.

Lens settings were M, Full, VH on; Norm; unlock

I was stopping the birds but they were all out of focus.
Need your tips. I love watching and hunting ducks and geese. Now after 50 years
of duck hunting would like to take more pics than take more ducks.
Thanks

Just what I''m looking for -- a jump start. I must belong to the
millennials -- I need instant gratification unless that takes too long.

Here in Idaho we have a Dark Sky Reserve certified by the International Dark Sky Assoc (IDA)
I want to learn how to photograph the Milky Way. I have a Canon Rebel. I know fstops and film
speeds because I'm an old guy. Can you start me off with one or two settings to get me going
and I'll try to experiment from there.
Thank you
Dr Dark
