Gene, thanks! Your Rx10 photos over on Flickr helped me decide to give the M4 a try!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has issues with Capture One's cataloging system. I do love their editing software though. I may have to bite the bullet and go to LR, but (sigh) that's another learning curve.

Oops! I wonder if I did something wrong uploading the photo, because it is much sharper than this version.

First I want to thank everyone here who helped me earlier in the year when I was looking for a camera and/or lens for a trip to Alaska. The discussion was a great help. I ended up testing the Sony RX10 M4, sure that I would find the photos too soft because of the 1 inch sensor. But, in fact, I was blown away by the test photos I took and by the reach. (I could see birds! Far away in trees! :) ) That was the camera I took to Alaska. I've had an "interesting" year in the Chinese curse sense, so haven't done more than glance at my Alaska photos, but was pleased overall with the camera and its performance. I hope to post a couple here down the road.

Since my Adobe PS CS6 doesn't support the RX10, I downloaded Capture One Express and have been using it. I love the ease of photo editing with it, but find the cataloging and management system hard to understand and not at all intuitive. I'm debating whether or to buy the Capture One Pro Eleven for Sony as the price is going to go up (to what, I don't know) on Sept 25th. Or whether to bite the bullet and get Adobe CC. Either way, I need to figure out how to export my MTS videos as my Express program doesn't do that. Does anyone here use the Pro version and, if so, will it do video conversion or do I need to get another program for that?

I've enclosed a photo taken with the RX10 last May when we had a storm with incredible light.

I got the Rx10 M4 about a month ago to try out for an upcoming trip to Alaska. I've been disappointed in various point and shoot cameras in the past, and didn't know if I'd like the M4 well enough to keep. I was prepared to be disappointed with the IQ on the M4--after all, it only has a one inch sensor, right? But I turned out to love it. Love the huge zoom and the fact that the images are quite sharp at the long end. I tested it against my Nikon D5500 with a kit 18-140mm lens and it came out favorably. I'm developing a whole new relationship with birds because, hey, I can zoom in and see them. :) I'd recommend it if it's not too big (or pricey) for what you're looking for.

Great discussion here. Gene, love all your photos. I'm currently trying the Rx104 and have been impressed with it so far. I think I was so worried about the small sensor that I had low expectations and it has favorably surprised me.

Hmm. Can't figure out how to get the photo I attached to show in the post other than as a download link. Still learning my way around here.

I've been enjoying the conversation here. After much dithering, I decided to try the RX 10 iv as I have a trip to Alaska coming up in June. I love the idea of not having to change lenses all the time, but, as others have pointed out, it has a small sensor for big bucks. I currently have a Nikon D5500 with the 18-140 mm DX lens--not bad in good light, especially at the wider end--and my wonderful nifty fifty. My choice is to buy a lens with more zoom for the 5500 and perhaps a good wide lens or try something like the RX 10. I tried the Sigma 100-400 lens and while the photos it took were sharp, I realized when I opened the box that I was delusional about its weight and size and there was no way I wanted to carry that sucker on a plane or on our land tour. So I bought the Rx 10 iv to see what it can do. So far, I've been pleasantly surprised. Having that much zoom is addictive and the IQ is surprisingly good. But I shoot mostly landscapes and have yet to see how it does there. I'm still struggling to learn the focus and there are an amazing--one might say daunting--amount of possible user settings for the camera.
