I don't read as well as I used to but I don't recall where you said how you did the download. In other words, you don't say what computer application or feature of the OS was used.
I am hesitant to bring this up with someone of your experience and skill, but here goes:
Did you use your OS's file manager in its native mode to look at the card? If so, did you poke around and look in every folder on the card? I suspect it's Windows because Mac users usually say so, being - like me - in the minority. But I think it highly likely that the way Canon uses the card is independent of your computer's OS, probably uses some version of the universally readable FAT for that "volume".
I am not offering any suggestions because I am 100% ignorant about Canon's ways of using cards. But since I'm so uninformed, I can easily conjure up a mystery by which those files could go elsewhere on the card.
Forgive this analogy please, but on my SONY cameras, the video stuff goes in different folders and they are buried pretty well for whatever reason. It's just a thought about an improbable possibility.

I used Adobe Bridge to download copies of the images to my HD. I am a Windows 10 user and have Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 on my machine. My worklow after a wedding allows me to backtrack from a 'final version' image to the original RAW file.
When this problem arose I went back to the 'Original RAW Files' folder and then to the SD cards (the original 'Originals') and put the cards through (i) the camera again (ii) Transcend's own recovery software RecoverRX (iii) Card Recovery (iv) EaseUS Recovery Wizard (v) Hetman Photo Recovery and (vi) Recuva all without success.
I haven't tried Canon's own software to download the original files but might just try that as well. I'm currently stuck indoors here as a result of the CoVid-19 lockdown so I've got nothing (more) to lose. Will update you later.
