This is a photo of My former Pastor that has since passed away and His wife wanted a photo to put up in the church and this is the only one she had.I had to crop him out of the photo of three people and had to get rid of a thick shadow around the right side of his head and shoulder but can't get it to look sharper. As You can see it looks blured when you inlarge it and they need an 8x10 of it.UHH has always came through for me so here i am asking for help again.Thank You for all You folks do.Wish i had more know how to do these things, still trying to learn.God Bless

I will try to remember that about the shutter speed 250 or more and the IS,mabe I will try to turn it off on my other lens to see what happens when my shutter speeds are over 1/250

Yes ......with shutter speeds 1/250 or faster ! .......IS has the ability to degrade image quality, composition, shorten battery life, and lengthen AF target acquisition. Most sports and wildlife action shooters never turn it on .....

Reason I went with the 10 second was i pushed the shutter button down and it took a few seconds for the camera to stop shaking.I should have used a remote but didn't think of it at the time i was messing around with it.The lens i have is non ISI normally use spot,I believe that is what I had it on.Got out today and messed around with it and got better results.I posted one of the shots I took from today.Looks like I just need to learn more about these lens and a lot more LOL.With all the help I get from UHH I have gotten better, but I better get better quick, ain't gettin any younger LOL.I do have a tele,it is the sigma 150-500mm lens, but just wanted to try this and see what it could do,since I bought it.I need to learn what it will be best for I guess. You can tell I am not a professonal lol,Learning something new every day. Thanks for the reply

Several questions? Why 10 seconds shutter delay? 1second is enough to dampen mirror slap.

IS needs to be off since you're on tripod. IS motors on tripod will produce motion on tripod.

What metering did you use? Should have been on Spot not Matrix or even center weighted. After you get the focus you want, turn focus to manual. Your scene has multiple complicating factors that could shift focus so hot the bird you want with a small spot.

ISO is probably maxed out for those cameras but don't think that is the problem.

If you want to do small birds, you need a bigger lens or good teleconverter

RCBlank - the EXIF data from the bird house is incomplete in that DPP shows ISO-0 which is not correct. DPP also cannot show the focus point to assess the results verses the point of focus.

The two birds flying by the orange barrier is hard to say what is going on. You have continuous focus active, but the focus point does not fall on either of the birds. You have aperture at f/8, ISO-800, and shutter at 1/5000. I have the same f/4 non IS version of this lens. I'd suggest two items:

1. Unless you need a larger depth of field or less light, set the aperture at f/5 for all shooting scenarios.

2. For a non IS enabled zoom on a cropped sensor, use a shutter 1/400 for hand holding or faster based on light and / or freezing action of the scene.

I purchased the tripod ring / collar for this lens to use with a monopod or tripod. This is an annoying extra expense, but I find the collar on the lens very useful when using support such as a monopod or tripod.

Both photos look heavily cropped with the birdhouse being additionally processed based on the truncated EXIF data. To better answer what to do to different, we'd have to see the original. Your distance to subject may be the issue which is harder to gage from the cropped / processed examples.
