Years ago BA offered to fly the Concorde to Schenectady, NY for a charity event. People paid $1,000 per person to fly out over the Atlantic, go supersonic and return to Schenectady. A friend owned an aviation fuel company, was contracted to refuel the plane in Schenectady, and asked me to come along. We drove from Syracuse to Schenectady in a very large fuel truck, parked under the wing and refueled the Concorde. There are 13 fueling ports under the wings. The plane has “wet” wings, meaning the entire wing is a fuel tank. The fuel cools the wing at supersonic speeds from the heat generated by friction with the air. The interior of the Concorde is very narrow due to the streamlined shape of the fuselage. It was a long time ago, but I seem to remember there were two seats on either side of the center aisle. The event took place in the late ‘70’s, but the avionics in the cockpit were from the early 60’s. The general aviation aircraft I flew back then had more modern avionics than the Concorde.

I have been using an Epson Perfection V600 Photo Scanner, which can digitize photos, slides and negatives. Combined with the Silverfast software, it does remarkable work. The software helps correct the color cast from old slides and negatives. I've done about 1,000 slides and at least 2,000 negatives, and an equal number of photos. Time consuming, but the scanner and software make it relatively easy.

You guys are all trying to one up each other. You should have seen the last 9 years of my marriage. Talk about cold! Although once in a while the cold spell would be broken by about 3 days of white hot rage.

On the serious side, I didn’t know and initially she didn’t know that the bi-polar was taking over. Three kids and after each kid was born her condition took a huge step down. The depression would be so bad that other than going to the bathroom, she’d be bedridden for 3 days at a time. She missed so much work that she finally lost her job.

The depression was interspersed with periods of mania, spending money we didn’t have, restlessness, fits of rage and later infidelity. Besides working in town and farming, I had a full time job at home cooking meals, washing clothes, cleaning house and raising the kids because she was either too depressed, too manic or hospitalized (6 times). From what my now adult kids tell me, I was fairly successful at keeping them unaware of what all was going on.

When you see the bipolar medicine commercials on television, just know that they are true or even underplaying the seriousness. People without experience think clinical depression is the same as having the blues or just a down day. They think you just make yourself get up and go to work. Not even close. My ex made the last 9 years of our marriage a living hell but I hold no animosity. I wouldn’t wish bipolar on even my worst enemy.
You guys are all trying to one up each other. You ... (show quote)

My younger daughter is bipolar. When manic she bought a bedroom set that wouldn’t even fit into her bedroom. She bought a very expensive diamond ring she couldn’t afford. When depressed, has attempted suicide. Bipolar is no joke.

And I second that invitation.

I already subscribe to that section. As I said there are real photographers who prefer smartphones. I wasn’t knocking smartphones. I was commenting on the fact that most people use them for snapshots. And, I’ve seen some great photos done with them, but that is because it was a tool, like every other camera. The real factor that makes a photo great is the photographer.

For most people, non-photographers, the phone camera is just a way to capture the moment. It is not usually meant to be “art”. It is truly a world of snapshots. When SLR’s were introduced for serious photographers, most people were using Instamatics with stick on top flash cubes. They, like most cellphone users, just wanted a way to remember the event, place, or people. Not too much time spent on composition, lighting, depth of field, etc. However, as we see in the Smartphone Photography section, there are real photographers who just prefer the cellphone that is always with them over camera equipment that you need to lug around. Thankfully, we live in an era where there is an abundance of choices.

Excellent, just like everything you have posted. What software do you use to colorize?

This will sound sacrilegious. I own a Nikon D80, D5500, and a D850, and a bunch of lenses. When I’m traveling, going to a family event, or most other crowded areas, my Nikon Coolpix P7000 is my “just like it” choice. DSLR type controls, great IQ, adequate zoom, and small size. It just fits.

The negative comments are basically unrealistic. First of all we are looking at 45-50 year old Plus-X or Tri-X photos, two relatively grainy films. The photos were not taken to exhibit great technique, but great subjects and compositions. Once the images were transformed into jpg’s, there wasn’t a lot of post processing that could fix any perceived problems. If these appear to be “snapshots”, not great works of photo manipulation, then so be it. The celebration of the human body, in natural poses and in a natural setting, and the uncontrived comfort of the subjects is enough.

If you are impressed with kids who are respectful, disciplined, hardworking, and capable of learning new skills, you should watch the cadets in your local Civil Air Patrol squadron. These cadets, ages 12-18, not only learn the basics of military discipline, physical fitness, and how to function as a valued member of a team, but also volunteer to support local events, such as directing the parking at air shows. The cadets build great communications, planning, and execution skills, and are remarkably confident without being cocky. It is impressive to see a 17 year old make a presentation that rivals anything a much more senior adult could produce.

It certainly worked for these shots! Every 4th of July my town puts on a terrific fireworks display. Without a logical, well thought out way to capture it as you have, my work has been either a few good shots, or this stuff sucks. Thanks for the info.
