The general rule of the RX100 series is that they are smaller than anything better, and better than anything smaller.

When they went from version 5 to 6, Sony got rid of the 24-70 lens, and went with a 24-200. The bigger lens is only F2.8 on the wide end, but is F4.5 on the long end. So if you shoot past 100mm much, you will want the model VI.

The lens on the V, on the other hand, is F1.8 to F2.8, so a lot of people prefer the model V, for the faster lens.

Think I'm going for the 24-70, thanks !

Anyone have any experience with this camera ?
Looking to get one of these as a grab and go camera for places and times when a full size DSLR and lens may be too much.

THOUGHTS ???

I can’t confirm the model of the sensor, but the size/resolution, DR curve, and low light/high ISO performance looks almost identical to the 5D4, and is superior to the 6D2 in all those respects.

Correct, it is essentially the same sensor only a newer version of it, or so says the head of canon Japan.

As a long time professional advertising photographer and an early digital adopter, my big problem with mirrorless cameras, is the viewfinder. In high contrast situations the viewfinder either biases toward the bright light or the shadow area, leaving the photographer unable to define all that is in the frame. NOT GOOD. I would love to embrace the extra sharpness that a lens that isn't compromised by having to be designed with a mirror/prism in the optical equation (much like a rangefinder Leicas lens can take advantage of) but this is a question of compositional fidelity. If you can only clearly see part of the framed image then that is a huge disadvantage. I would love to be able to say otherwise. The technology will catch up.....I'll buy in when it does....

Have you looked thru or at the EVF on the EOS R. It’s pretty amazing.

My only comment is what portable, battery powered WiFi storage device would you employ? And do you think, especially when shooting raw, that the Wifi link could provide the BW necessary to transfer the shots in real time in a high speed burst (not to mention the extra load on the camera’s CPU without compromising burst performance)? I just cannot see that as a substitute for a second card. Even if the combination of the camera and the remote storage device could maintain 100 Mb/sec (which is questionable), it would take about 3 seconds per shot to do a transfer - a long way from a 7 FPS burst rate.

Ok, I get your point. So when was the last time you had a SD card fail ? Just curious because I have been using them for some time and I have never had one fail, at least one that was treated properly. Just saying that in this time that SD cards are pretty reliable and though a backup card would be nice, it’s not the deal killer it once was.

Good article, thanks !
I think with the expected changes coming with the firmware update most of the bigger differences between the two will be resolved. As far as the dual cards the 5D has vs the Eos R, WiFi can take care of that, simply connect to another device and save pics to it while shooting.
My biggest concern is that the Digic 6+ of the 5D is getting long in the teeth. Canon has got to release a replacement for the 5D in the near future and I would hate to buy one just to have a new model released a few months later.
So I’m “leaning” to the EOS R now but not totally committed yet.

With the adapter EF-S lenses would mount on the EOS-R isn't that true?

Please make yourself aware of the mount incompatibility issues. If you have any EF-S lenses thay will NOT mount on the Canon full frame camera models. Just today I had a customer come in who bought a Canon 6D on Ebay and sold her 70D in anticipation of getting the full frame 6D. When it showed up yesterday she was disappointed that none of her 3 EFS lenses would even mount on it, she traded in her EFS lenses for a pair of full frame Tamron lenses with me today. An expense she had not anticipated in advance.

All my lenses are EF. This was done in anticipation of going to full frame.

Going full frame, finally ! Looking at either the 5D MK IV or the new EOS R. I like them both. Have held and fondled both. I like the EOS R for the updated processor, mirrorless, size.... Like the MK IV for the proven track record, most controls are the same as my 80D. I’m aware of the pending firmware update for the EOS R that will hopefully address most of the issues people have with this body. I’m not concerned with the video aspect, I’m all about stills. So what I’m asking is what you think of these two compared to each other. Looking for responses from those who “actually have experience” with these bodies.
If your a Canon basher, please keep you comments for another thread that caters to your kind !
Thanks in advance for all the responses !
