Taken at 4 PM, about 4 1/2 hours before sunset.
Thanks for the thought.

Last week I shot some images of a pile driver near our house. When processing one of the images, found some ghostly bands that were brought out even stronger in the second image that had been run through Topaz Adjust. The ghost images are in the upper left-center of the photo. My first thought was that it was a reflection of the car window as I shot through the windshield. But I was outside the car and was not shooting through any windows. The pile driver works with diesel explosions that are spaced at about one-second intervals. Could it be that the sound waves from the explosions are somehow visible to the camera? Or that the sound waves are affecting the smoke particles in a way that gives them a wave image.

You are evil. After playing the ones you displayed, I started playing the ones linked to your songs. Ohhhhh the hours that could be spent reliving.....

We have driverless cars today!!! Texting and talking on cell phones.

I look forward to autonomous cars. There will be some large technical, legal, and sociological problems to overcome in the process. One will be displacement of people that drive for pay such as truck drivers.

I buy all of my major equipment from National Camera in Minnesota. I may pay more but they have been supportive over the years. I do get a 30-day return policy. I have made a commitment to myself that if there is any chance I will buy it elsewhere, I will do all of the internet checking and price comparing before I walk into the store. Once I walk into the store I have committed to buying it from them if I buy it at all. I find it dishonest to check the item out at a brick and mortar store and then buy it cheaper elsewhere online.

Previous comments about the lack of sharpness and contrast are both a reference to the original image's overall softness - which I would say doesn't suit the subject. Your redux is an improvement but the main subject, which I would say is the locomotive part of the train, still has a softness about it. I'd recommend increasing the contrast for the locomotive, but don't allow the blacks to become too heavy or solid, and keep the shadows from going too dark.

The cloud of steam, on the other hand, is looking over-processed. The contrast (and/or Clarity) is high, but I don't think that's the problem. Rather it looks over-sharpened and would benefit from reduced sharpening or softening via denoise (applied locally).

Thank you for the feedback.

Hmm... I might be a minority opinion here.

I like that it is straightened, and the frame removed.

However the rest of the edits, I would prefer to not have occurred. It now feels over processed, the steam does not look real, and I prefer the original crop better.

I love the shot and the signs do not bother me. This is one of very few BW images I have seen in this forum that I really think BW is much better than color.

I am not sure you are in the minority. I am not sure I am content with the level of processing, over processed.
Thank you for providing feedback.

I will take a run at it with NIK. I do like working with the "structure" slider in the high structure option.

I have reviewed the comments made earlier to my Steam and Iron.
1- It has been straightened using LR lens adjust.
2- It has been processed in Topaz Adjust
3- Converted to black and white in Topaz
4- Signs are still there using the automated tools caused more damage than good. Still, may go back and use the Photoshop Elements tools that are a little more manual.

Some may find the Topaz Adjust processing too aggressive, overcooked.

1 - Burnt edges seemed like a good idea to invoke a past era. Also, know as .... seemed like a good idea at the time.
2 - Version to follow has been straightened. Part of my Lightroom workflo should be "lens correction".

Erv, thank you, I noticed the signs last night as I was reviewing images. We had set up in a spot and missed the train so it was down the road with GPS and maps to catch up; I did not have time to omit the signs. It was drive up, stop the car and start shooting. I will give it a run through Lightroom / Elements to see if I can get a satisfactory removal.

Got this last fall as a local favorite restored locomotive and train headed west of the Twin Cities for a fall outing. I have presented this one or two places and got a "meh" reaction. What am I missing?

I prefer Ice to Ice II. Ice has more of an image Ice II is kind of a gray amorphous mass.
