I was on a cruise in Alaska a year ago. I took my Nikon d7200 with a Tamron 10-24 and a Tamron 18-400. I used the 10-24 for only about 20-30 shots. The 18-400 with the "crop sensor" gave me all the reach I needed and some great wildlife photos. I was very happy I went "light" on the trip.
I went last year and only used my Nikon D7200 with the 18-140 lens. Took lots of pics. A whale watching excursion even got close enough even with a large boat for me to get good whale pics. Fir whales I recommend you set rapid repeat shutter and push and hold shutter before whale surfaces. Easy to delete unwanted pics. May only want to save to one card to allow larger buffer.
