I have the Olympus 40-150 mm lens. I also have two Olympus Teleconverters: the 2x (MC-20) and the 1.4 (MC-14). The 2x will extend the lens to 80-300mm (160-600mm equivalent) and increase the aperture from 2.8 to 5.6. The 1.4x will extend the lens to 56-210 mm (112-420 mm equivalent) and increase the aperture from 2.8 to 3.9. Either converter will not add much length or weight to the lens.

A number of years ago, I went to China and had the experience of going from an a/c room to hot and humid outside and my lens fogged up. So my question for Antarctica, should I be concerned by going from a cold outside to a warm room? I had one person tell me to put my camera in an insulated lunch bag.

Also, I have been looking at silica gel packs to help absorb moisture and I wanted to know if the Ruggard Desiccant Silica Gel Pack (or Pelican or any other brand) is any better or same as the standard gel packs (reuseable)?

Thanks for your input/help.

I am currently in Ushuaia having just completed a nine day Antarctic cruise which included both Zodiac landings and cruising. I did nothing special with my cameras. Lenses did not fog going from ship to Zodiac to land.

My standard non-wildlife travel kit is the OM-1 (formerly the EM1-II) and the 14-150 and possibly the 9-18. This is a light and smallish kit. With today's noise reduction software I want small and light over fast.

I agree with a previous reply my Olympus ED 12-100 F4 is the lens I use most. The body I have it on is the new OM System OM1. The combination weighs 2 lbs 14 oz. I am 75 and have no problem carrying this combination ( I use a wrist strap). Before taking photos make sure the IS switch on the lens is slid to ON.

[quote=cjc2]A trigger for lightning is readily available for most systems. Best of luck.[/quot

Trigger is an extra piece of equipment that needs to be carried along with the camera. Also a tripod would probably be need to set up camera nad trigger. This would not work in the case of a boat pitching and rolling in a storm at sea.

I live in upstate NY and have always wanted a lightening bolt photo. No way in upstate NY could I get one. This storm at sea gave me the opportunity of an unobstructed view of the storm.

You still need to aim and frame the subject. You monitor the scene through the view finder and decide at what point you want to capture the subject. When you press the shutter release, the camera captures x number of frames before you pressed the shutter and x number after (you specify x). In that way you capture the action that you wanted. You still need to have all camera parameters (ISO, WB, exposure, etc) set correctly. In the case of a bird sitting on a nest, you monitor the bird and when it takes off you press the shutter, insuring the you got the bird in flight. In the case of the lightening photo, I monitored the sky and when I saw the flash, I pressed the shutter. I don't know any other technique that would have allowed me to photograph the lightening bolt. The camera did not decide for me. It is no different than using a burst mode.

I am currently traveling in Europe with two MKiii bodies and one OM1 body. For travel photography, landscape, cityscape, there is not much difference between the MKiii and the OM1. I do like the deeper grip and the menu layout on the OM1, it is better in low light and focused faster. The lens I use most for travel photography, the Zuiko 12-100Pro is kept on the OM1. I have two other Pro lenses on the MKiii; 7-14 and 40-150. If I am going for birds or wild life, I will put the 40-150 on the OM1 as it has bird/animal detection and is much faster tracking BIF.

If I am strictly going for birds, I use .my OMD E-X1 with the Zuiko 150-500 lens

If you intend to soot BIF, I think you will be happiest with the OM1 paired a pro Zuiko lens.

Take plenty of soap in addition to your camera. You'll find subtle but excessive brain washing all the time. Counter terrorism? -- ask Amnesty International. They finally reported that Israel is an apartheid state; of course Israel said, "Who? Us?"

I am sure there are hate Israel sites that you can post to. This is a photography site and should be free of political statements.

My advise - cancel.

Why. I have there seven times. It is a great place to visit and photograph. I took a 14 to 28mm lens, a 28 to 200mm lens and a 40 to 300mm lens. This covered everything I wanted to shoot.

I wonder if obtaining a “TSA pre-check” designation would help?

My husband + I recently applied. It lasts for 5 years, I believe. We had to go to a local center to apply in person and be fingerprinted on an iPad.

Can’t remember the cost was about $85-125. If you pay with credit card most major credit cards will refund you the entire cost.

Gets you through security w/o removing your shoes or taking your laptop out, for example.

Only snag I discovered: however TSA Pre-Check records your name for their records, you have to list that precisely when you make your reservation with various airlines (including the use of your middle initial).

Sometimes precheck works and sometime it doesn't. In Newark one time I was passed through with no problem. The next time through Newark I was scolded for not taking my photo gear out of the bag and placing them in a tray. European airports are about 50/50 as to whether they check or not.

Yes. It has a leather shoulder pad and a leather strap that goes from the back of the strap, under the left arm and attaches to ring on the front of the strap. It also has a clip that attaches to your belt on the right side for more support. This has a quick release to allow rotation of the camera up to your eye. I find that I rarely us the belt clip. I only use the strap with my Oly 150-400 mm pro telephoto lens.

I use a HoldFast Gear Money Maker Solo Sling Right-Handed Leather Camera Strap $180. Very comfortable and offers good support while allowing me to quickly bring my camera up for the shot.
