70-200 f/2.8 will suit you well.

Clearly something went horribly wrong. I upgraded not to long ago and it went smoothly with no issues. Hopefully you have a backup system in place. Good luck.

I do it quite frequently. Check page 337 (Self Timer) in the manual or select c3 in the custom settings menu. It's pretty straight forward.

Good Luck

Sounds like the shutter issue that I had and was subsequently corrected under the recall. No issues since it was repaired by Nikon.

Of all the RAID levels, RAID 0, which is striped volume with no redundancy, is absolutely the least secure of all the RAID levels. You experience a hiccup on one drive, your data is permanently lost. The only advantage of RAID 0 is a wider data path and faster performance, but in a NAS environment you are not likely to see any benefit, since data transmission over ethernet is going to be your bottleneck.

Gene... you are correct. I am actually mirrored at RAID 1 on the NAS. My mistake.

I use network attached storage set to RAID 0 to protect from hardware failure. The "keeper" photos are published to a cloud portfolio manager service (2nd copy) after editing. In January of each year I will use LR to compress and zip the previous years folders to an external drive which goes into the fireproof safe (3rd copy)

If I have a fire or other disaster, I would be able to recover all of the images I published plus those in the safe. That is an acceptable level of risk for me.

Backup software can be a pain. All I care about is the data (photos), so the method above is easy and part of my PP workflow. No extra steps until the year end exercise for long term archiving.

PS... I work for a data protection software company and the method I described is close to what companies do with low RTO/RPO applications and data.

Your first shot is really interesting, Larry! What is it? A preface to a rain storm, or maybe a kind of cloud? Did it bring rain with it? Your second one is so cute, too!

I believe this was just a regular summer storm with a heavy downpour. The outflow winds were insane and there were three other cells like this one all around us. We actually had to stop on the side of the road to let one of them pass in front of us. It was an interesting and somewhat intense wait.

Just rode rode from Seattle to Denver and saw a great part of the country I have never seen before. I have way too many images to share, but these are two that I really liked for one reason or another. Enjoy.

if the lens has VR, make sure it is turned off when using a tripod.

Listen, I'm old school. Been shooting for over 50 years and although post processing is extremely important especially when printing but I've always been a purist and prefer not to crop or alter the original shot with special effects etc. So if there is a setting on this high tech device that I'm not using correctly I'd like to know. I'm always learning new techniques.

I also shoot a D750 and I was unhappy with the contrast for the same reasons you described. I changed the Picture Control setting to Neutral (no in camera adjustments) and started making the corrections I wanted in LR. This solved my issue.

Good luck.

Just for clarity... Flicker reduction for still images was added to the D5 in firmware release c 1.10 (6/23/16)

Changes from ā€œCā€ Firmware Version 1.00 to 1.10

ā€¢ A Flicker reduction option has been added to the PHOTO SHOOTING MENU.

etc...

Both are excellent cameras. For sports.. I started with the D7000, then the D750 and now the D5. I did not realize the shots I was missing with the slower FPS, so if there is any option for you to get into a D500 in the near future I would hold out for it.

Just my two cents.

Best guess is that it will help, although there appears to be a mild debate going on over some points, which I can't settle.
Trial and error (mostly error), here I come!
I certainly appreciate all the work you put into your answer, and will take it to heart.
Thanks.

poiduck.... there is no "best way" to do anything in the photography world. That's what makes it fun and getting differing opinions is what makes us better.

I provided some tips that will work for you given you current skill set. In no way am I Implying that the tips I posted are a best practice or that they will works in every situation. if you are simply trying to get better images for the reasons you described, then give it a try and make adjustments along the way.

We were all beginners at one time. Take small steps and get better with each click and don't get frustrated with all of the advice. I'm cool with someone disagreeing with my opinion, but I am confident that a few of those tips, if not all of them, will help get you going in the right direction.

Good luck.

LOL... too much? That is about as quick and dirty as one can get given the OP's requirements.
