We have a Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 100-400 lens that my wife uses for wildlife. particularly birds. It is a nice lens but has a fair bit of trouble focusing and the body does not seem to have the ability to choose single point center focusing. She wants autofocus, not manual. The minimum seems to be 11 points and we would like to choose just 1. Is there a Nikon APS-C body that will let us do center point only focusing?

Can you actually see it change focus when you point at subjects that are different distances from the camera? If the lens seems to behave as it should it could be a camera setting related to focus. My cameras can be set to NOT take the photo unless it's achieved perfect focus. Also, if you have another lens, try it out before taking it in for repair.

It does try to focus but does not lock in. I tried another lens as mentioned above.

My wife has had a Nikon D5300 for 5+ years. Recently, it will not shoot when set on autofocus. It has the Nikon 18-200mm lens. It will shoot on manual focus and in Liveview. We have tried reset to factory settings, cleaning the lens connections, and cleaning the autofocus sensor with air. I tried putting another 18-200 on it. No dice. Any thoughts?

Here's one from the last time, Cottonwood Cove.

I am in Kanab with the amazing good fortune of permits for Coyote Buttes North and South. Took me 5 years to score The Wave. I am pretty well set for North, with various locations tagged and guidance on best time of day. You can chime in on that, but my question is really about South. I have been to Cottonwood Cove once, for several morning hours. This time I have the whole day, and will go in with a small tour group. We will visit Paw Hole and the Cove, but I am not sure where I should suggest we go first. I have read that both areas are best in the later afternoon, but I have to decide which to do in the morning, and for how long. What do you have to suggest about that? I have been to White Pocket twice already, so you do not need to get into that.

I am just getting into astro. What lights do you recommend for light painting the foreground? I hear that some lights let you adjust the color without an extra filter. That might be nice.

You will get the best star-burst effect with a lens that has straight aperture blades and shooting at a tighter F-stop. You don't need a filter to do this.

So do Nikon lenses not have straight blades?

So, I was hanging around some hoodoos with a couple other photographers waiting for sunrise, and one of them with a D850 said that he had a Tamron wide angle zoom because Nikon lenses do not do sunbursts well. I shoot wide with a Canon 16-35 f4 that does sunbursts well (especially W/O the polarizer), but I also have a D7200 with the Nikon 18-200, and have not had good luck with it. What say all of you?

Typically when getting a new computer, for photo editing (w/Photoshop Elements) I would just make sure that it had plenty of HD space, RAM, and a very high end video card with good video memory. This then became the general computer that my wife and I use. She has suggested that she would like me to have a separate computer for photo editing, because after a big trip I am tying up the computer a lot for 4-6 weeks. Is my past practice good enough, or would the community have a more specific recommendation for me to get a new computer that would be rather specifically used for photo editing. I might also try Macphun or some other editor. Thanks for your input.
