I am curious of how many people use filters on really good glass. Am i degrading the lens even with good expensive filters?

I shoot with a d850 and d500 and various different lenses.

I am going to Nepal and Bhutan in November and doing quite a bit of trekking. Even though I am an avid hiker I am concerned about the weight of the D850 with my 28-300 which is the lens I would take for hiking. I will be taking the D850 on the trip, but was trying to come up with a different set up for the trekking portions. and Back up camera.

I am considering a Sony RX10 IV. Obviously I am giving up some quality but the 24-600 zoom is interesting the weight is good.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

It always helps to post examples, otherwise we just guess.

Hard to do that, it is the keeper rate that is the issue. The majority of the D850 shots are good only a few of the D500. So Hard to show unless you are looking at all of the photos. In other words over 80 percent of the d850 shots are sharp and only 40 percent of the D500 are sharp.

I am fortunate enough to live on the Arkansas River in Colorado, where I take daily nature walks with lots of wildlife to see. A while back on the advice of Steve Perry I went to a prime 300 with the option to add a 1.4 TC. Great combination because of light weight. I have combined that with my D850 and my keeper rate has been great and I have been ecstatic with the combination.

Today I had switched some lenses around and I had the 300 and TC on my D500. I was shooting some of the exact same things I shoot every day with identical settings but when I returned home so many of them were just soft and not near as tack sharp as with my D850. I was very surprised by this.

Just looking for thoughts and advice, I definitely get sharper pictures with the 300 prime with the TC and the D850 than I do with the same lens set up and the D500.

As another poster said if all you have is a 500 you will miss a lot of shots. You do not need a 500 in less you shoot a lot of birds. I have 1,000's of shots and when I look at where most of them ended up it was 400 or a little less. Last year I had the 180-400 with a 1.4 TC I hardly ever used the teleconverter except for birds.

I have been to Africa many times I go once a year. It depends what kind of photos you want to bring home. If you want real wall hangers the best lens is something like a 200-400 zoom.

As an old large format guy, set up a still life scene so the lighting will not change and practice using your spot meter and writing down the reading at different points in the scene and shoot that reading. This will give you a better understanding of highlights and shadows. Then you will learn the best settings and the results of each. It's like playing the zone system.

Why do so many jerks on this site find it necessary to be so condescending, I don't get it. You jerks on this site use the word amateur as if it is a dirty word.

How sad that the only way you can feel superior is to put others down. I like the site but it has a lot of condescending jerks on it.

If you aren't going to answer the question stay out of it.

Looking for honest input. I haven't entered a photo contest in a few years, but everyone is telling me to enter these images?

Honest thoughts??

Thanks for all the great replies. This is an African wildlife travelogue I am doing. It seems for cropped pictures, lets say I have a highly cropped bird picture, when I look at in the library if fills the screen and I am happy with it. In LR slideshow it looks like a small cropped image.
