As GWH3 said...it's art! And, as the old saying goes...art is in the eye of the beholder!

If you're doing this for yourself, do what you enjoy!

If you're doing it to sell images, and the money is important, or could become so, then you can worry about what 'others' think!

Got an email with a single image of an American Kestrel, forwarded by a friend of mine, along with this story, from the photographer:

"Decent images of flying raptors, such as this male American Kestrel can be hard to come by.

…while driving down a farm road in western Placer county, still recovering from a bout with the flu, this Kestrel came flying from behind our SUV passing me on the driver’s side. Knowing I just had a few seconds, I grabbed my camera, yelled to my wife “grab the wheel”, assuming she heard me as I accelerated (and indeed she did grab the wheel and kept us on the road), I shot a quick series, of which only this one turned out.

Don’t do that! Not a good idea!"

Would you say this guy was a risk taker?

We've got sunshine in Richmond, Va, too...of course, it's reflecting off of the 8-10 inches of snow we got in the previous 18 hours!

Is there reasonably priced equipment out there for purchase/hire for doing this yourself, rather than shipping out those precious slides?

The Blue Ridge Parkway has, of course, long been a popular destination for photographers, and Mabry Mill has probably been photographed (and painted) more frequently than any other site on the parkway!

Being born and bred in Virginian, I've seen these images for over half-a-century...and your image is as good as any I've ever seen!

Congrats!

Patience has always been one of the most important attributes of a successful photographer!

Generally, using images, in a news reporting/editorializing type of situation, isn't considered to be copyright infringement by the courts, especially when not used as part of the content of a publication that is sold for profit. If the model and photographer decided to actually make this part of a book, permissions from the owners of the photos would not just be advisable but required, as no legitimate publisher would allow their inclusion, otherwise.

The caption, of course, would be: "Excuse me...are you going to eat that?"

How about..."Surely you don't expect me to go out in THAT!"

High school, 1965! A Yashica-Mat 120, Twin Lens Reflex. Took 120 film which gave you square, something like 2" x 2" frames, very crisp (B & W...of course) images! It was great for taking candid photographs, which was an asset when shooting for the school paper and yearbook. People assumed that a photographer had to hold a camera up to his eye in order to take a picture...a camera sitting on a desk top, or being held at waiste level, wasn't a threat...couldn't take a picture like that, right? Wrong, of course...viewfinder on a TLR is on top of the camera, usually with a popup hood! The school was brand new, and the principal, a photography nut, came on board during construction, and found a space about 15 x 15 off of a chemistry lab and convinced the contractor to finish it off as a dark room for the school paper and yearbook staff photogs! An entrance with two 90 degree bends, red lights and the principal donated a pro grade Bogen enlarger! Great way to start down this highway of fun!

One of my favorite tee-shirts has a squirrel on the front above the text 'Excuse me, but the bird feeder is empty!'

Love the second shot...looks like the boy is sporting a mullet hairdo!

Eggleston is credited, by most historians of photography, as being one of the main forces in the acceptance of color photography as being an art form worthy of display in galleries/museums. As the old saying goes...art is in the eye of the beholder...and no one could possibly make an informed judgment on Eggleston's art based on one or two images, out of tens of thousands taken over half a century! I love some of his work...and am not really enthused about others!
