Suntouched: I was just about to say to look for used ones to get the price down. Try the stores that take trade ins like B&H, Adorama etc. (I'm sure others here could give suggestions better than I?). BTW, the last place I would look is eBay - don't trust it.

Also see the great forum:

Drool over the images posted (first few topics) and read more about it than you want to know. Yes, I highly recommend th Q. Yes, you're right - the 28m lens makes a great travel and people lens. The IQ is so good that quite a bit of cropping is acceptable too.

I have had the Q for 1-1/2 years. I've carried it all over the world and I love it. I came from using a Nikon DSLR with a few lenses and now use the Q exclusively as my travel and goto camera. It is light and portable - it is the best camera because it is the one that goes with me. I carry it far more than I did the Nikon kit for this reason. It is a JOY to use as all the reviews say - gives photography a newfound pleasure. The IQ is superb. Is the 28mm limiting? In a way, but I can say as a bottom line I get more and much better shots than I used to with the Nikon and all it's supposed flexibility. For street photography (see face focus) it is simply incredible - will bring out the HCB in you! I never use the Nikon stuff anymore, thoroughly am happy with the purchase. Yes, re-read the https://craigmod.com/sputnik/leica_q/ article. He sums it up well. Weather sealing? Never been a problem for me, go to the Leica forum and read that it is actually a very tough camera. HTH!

I have been using AA and AAA eneloops for years and love them. Some of them do go bad though... I have a charger which lets me test them. If a device fails earlier than it should I test each one individually. Invariably one has discharged more than others. I toss that one and replace it. They're only a couple of bucks each. But one bad apple in the group will cause premature low voltage although the others are good.

I was walking through a market in vietnam with a fanny pack. A kind merchant came to me and said to move fanny pack to front as people unzip it from the back in jostling crowd and take stuff. So for fanny packs and back packs this is also something to consider and deal with.

I did the Rhine cruise last year. One thing no one has mentioned is to be wary of pickpockets and thieves. On our smallish river cruise two(!)people lost their wallets in Cologne. If you're one of those people who insist on carrying your passport with you, the implications are awful. This is a real threat.

I have one, and done extensive travel with it and completely agree. I'm not a fan boy of them or trying to justify my purchase, but I believe it to be true. Then **google for other reviews.** You'll see. Do you need a $5000 travel camera to get good results? Of course not - but if you want arguably the technically best, and certainly the most enjoyable camera you've ever used (I've used dozens over 50 years) then this is it.

If you want to read discussion about it and want to see a good forum:

Check out the image thread there - yes, ygwypf. Whether it's worth it to you is your call.

How much do you want to spend? If cost isn't a concern but excellence and suitability as a travel camera is your goal, the answer (mine, at least) is completely different than others' suggestion. But, I won't get into it if this isn't your interest (I don't won't to bother getting flamed.) I'm just trying to help - if spending thousands is ok, and you want "the best."

I used the example of a brick wall to try to keep the whole "shadows will have more noise" issue out of the equation.
Instead of a brick wall how about just a nice evenly lit 18% gray card?

All I'm trying to learn is....will an image taken at a high ISO have the same noise characteristics if it is properly exposed in low light vs high light.
In other words.....leaving the ISO set high the shutter and/or aperture are adjusted to achieve proper exposure.
(Short burst of intense light vs long exposure to low light) Any theoretical camera and sensor.

I would think that the amplification of the sensor signal stays the same since the ISO hasn't been changed and that the same amount of light (same number of photons) is gathered so the noise should be the same.

Yes, the lower ambient light shot will have more noise even at the same ISO since it is a longer exposure. Long exposure = heat build-up = more noise. Why do you think digital cameras limit the length of exposure you can set? It's because the sensor and heat sinking around it is heating up and a hot sensor is noisier. If the lower light level were adjusted for by only a larger aperture, but the same exposure time, than I think the noise would be the same - but possibly the image quality would be poorer due to the larger aperture.

Gene51 has written at length on tripods with excellent advice. The search functions on UHH are a little limited, but perhaps someone will find a link to some of Gene's posts....

WHERE has he written?? Yes, I hope if someone knows (or Gene yourself??) I would greatly appreciate it. I am in the market for a good tripod myself. Thanks in advance, people!

Excuse my stupidity, but I can't find what every here is referring to about "Gene51." I did Google search "Gene51 tripod" and didn't find anything except an excellent set of photos he did and lots of comments he posted here on UHH. Is that all you mean, or did he write an article about tripods somewhere?

Three years ago I decided to purchase my first DSLR Camera it was a Nikon D3100 with the 18-55 kit lens. Within two months and with a lot of help from the Internet I had learnt how to use my camera in any of them modes it had to offer. Slowly bit by bit my kit grew in size, first a lens then a tripod, then another lens and a better more expensive tripod with matching ball head quick release mount, a sling back type bag for quick access, an sb600 flash slowly a second one followed then a flash trigger and 2 receivers. This was only about 8 months into my Journey. very dear friend of mine lent me his Nikon on D5100 for a couple of weeks while he was on holiday, it was great so much better than mine, it had a built in interval timer so I made a timelapse movie, the lowlight capabilities were outstanding compare it to mine too. even little things like the screen resolution on the back blew mine out of the water.
It was almost a year later I finally upgraded my body, it felt like forever before I could afford a new one, well what with buying myself a Lee Filters foundation kit and 7 different filters, and not forgeting another lens (macro this time) my kit was getting to big for my bag. Well the day had come, my new Nikon D7100 was here, but what's this, it doesn't fit in my bag, I needed a new one, I also treated my new body to a new lens, a 70-200 f2.8.
I finally solved my Nikon D3100, 2x lenses and first bag to my nephew.
In October last year I went to Florida for three weeks and took most of my camera equipment and a lens that I borrowed off a friend for wide-angle landscape photography, most days I found myself going out with just one lens and the body. My kit had become to heavy, and if I'm completely honest a real pain in the backside to the point where when I got home I put it all up for sale.
Well this was back in November, and last night, after I had completely forgotten all about it being up for sale, completely out of the blue I got a phone call saying they wanted to buy the whole lot for almost the price I had asked for. I got a say I did overprice it a little bit just in case I had sensible offer.
When I was in America with all my kit, going out daily with only one lens on my camera even that started to get my nerves, so on a couple of occasions all I took with me was my mobile phones camera.

So what to do now with all this money?
do I buy another DSLR and have it sit indoors while I'm out having fun with my phones camera, I absolutely love photography but do we need all this kit. Come on guys what's your opinion what would you do with my money if it was your money to spend?
Three years ago I decided to purchase my first DSL... (show quote)

I dont know how much money there is, but I have a suggestion for you. This very question is significantly discussed on the Leica forum in the Q section:
http://www.l-camera-forum.com/forum/222-leica-q/
Many of us, including myself, came from heavy big DSLR bkgnds, bought a Leica Q, and **for 98%** of our shooting carry around the Q: we love it; we carry it far more often than we did the Nikon kits;we get more better quality images, etc. etc. I carried my Nikon all over and always thought twice about bringing it with me. Now, I carry the Q everywhere and it was my only travel camera on the last couple of trips. Too much detail to explain, go look at the forum and read about it. If some of the issues dont put off (cost, fixed wideangle(sort of)) you'll be glad you did. Many of us are....

MT: That sounds like a good price - is there a reason why you don't like it or recommend it? I haven't bought anything yet so would be open to suggestions from anyone. It seems expensive but reviews I read of it (the tripod) have been very positive. Not sure about the Leica ball... that's why I asked.

I am planning on getting the Leica table top tripod to use with my new Leica Q. My question is, which ball head do you suggest? Reading reviews of the tripod, several people said they got the Really Right Stuff BH-25 ball head. I called RRS and they said I would need the BH-25LR, the QR clamp and a reducing bushing for a package price of about $215. I see I can order the Leica Large ball head for about the same price. Which head would you recommend? It looks that the Leica adds a few more inches of height so that might be useful for macro work and general convenience. Comments, please?
