I thank you all, some very good advice indeed. I am still researching heavily, and have also weighed in on new vs used as well to start with (point well taken Erv). My wife and I just purchased a home on some acreage out in the sticks in South Carolina, and the views, along with the wildlife are inspiring to say the least. I have taken to feeding the deer out here, and also to making it a point to get up early on the weekends and days off to watch the sunrise off of our back deck, and to sit on the front porch to watch it set, as we sit way up on a hill. The views are literally breathtaking at times. The "best" camera I currently own is an old Sony DSC with 5 mp, and while it takes "good" pictures, I certainly feel as though I could spend days and hours at this point in my life taking some seriously good shots that are worth framing. Kind of funny, as I get a little older I feel like I am mellowing so to speak, and this seems to me to be something that I could do from now until old old age

I've used Canon T's (latest T2i) and recently upgraded to 70D. Certainly take pretty good landscapes though they have cropped (smaller) sensors than full frame. Check my results from New Mexico.

Okay, projected use- My aim is to do some travelling in the area, as there is alot of nature type scenery in the area to photograph, not to mention at home where I live (wife and I just bought a home on acreage, and the scenery is breathtaking). I could easily see this turning into a needed fulltime hobby.....
Experience- Typical point and shoot up to now, taking shots of some scenery, kids, sporting events, etc, etc. Certainly nothing approaching any type of professional. But the appreciation is there.

Budget to start- around $1,000, give or take.

Real questions are:

Camera projected use?
What experience do you have?
Budget?

Use determines the type of camera.
Experience determines the features you want or need.
Budget simply determines what you can afford.

Outstanding recommendations Shellback, I appreciate the input. Spent a few years in the USN myself, as your Chief symbol and username suggests you did as well. Thank you for your service. I will be referring to your post often I have a feeling as several of the recommendations are exactly what I was looking for.

Hello all, I found this forum while researching online DSLRs as I am looking to buy my first "good" camera. My biggest interest is shooting outdoor landscapes, particularly sunrises, sunsets, and in wooded areas, along with nature scenes in general. Still researching models to get started, and would certainly appreciate any input and feedback from others more seasoned than I (which should not be too hard :)
