Thank you. The white tower in the water is a reflection of a large tower or some such at a refinery next to this area.

Is this the same shot as you posted on page 2 regarding exposure compensation? Looks like you could reach right out and touch the bird! Was the sky a very light or white color, or did the exposure compensation require that you give up sky color for bird details?

yes, same shot, re-posted to mention the partial metering was set, and not spot for this. Posted it because I like the shot, but mostly to make the point that there is no magic recipe for settings when shooting outdoors. You have to spend the time to learn your camera, the exposure triangle, and your physical and mental/psychological bias's and capabilities.

Eastern Screech Owl gotten in our front yard about 10PM one evening. saw a shadow fly into the bush, grabbed a small flashlight and spotted him/her. It was very polite and waited for me to get the camera and allowed two shots before moving on. They are only about 6" high...tiny little buggers. ;)

The lowly Great-tailed Grackle has more colors than the peacock! Also about 873x smarter too. ;)

I have a question on the exposure issue. When you do + compensation for white birds, is that after spot metering on the bird? I usually keep my metering on matrix and I have to do - compensation to keep from having blown areas on white birds. I would also be interested in knowing what metering mode most bird photographers use. In addition to matrix, Nikon has spot and highlight metering as modes I have tried or plan to experiment with.

My general bird settings (birds perched feeding etc ( I use Canons) is spot metering, manual mode with auto ISO. The auto works because my camera a 7Dmkii is relatively sensitive and I can set max ISO to 3200 and have a good chance of getting the shot. Shutter speed depends upon the lens and what my main interest is that day or moment. for the long lens 150-600 (equiv to 225-900mm) I never let SS drop below 1/1000 as I shoot handheld and am shaky nowadays. Nothing is chiseled in stone though, you have to experiment with the gear you have, and your style of shooting. Biggest watch out for is not to try to get to precise with settings. latitude is what you need shooting wildlife. The anal retentive settings are for the studio.

One thing I DO recommend unequivically is BACK BUTTON FOCUS! Set your camera up for it, and practice it. Your percentage of 'keeper' images of wild things will increase dramatically. If you do not understand what I am talking about then do a search on back button focus (your camera make and model).

Karin, any tips you want to share regarding shooting white birds against a dark background? Always a challenge for me with American white pelicans

Treat large white birds EXACTLY the way you would treat snowy landscapes. Believe it or not you increase the exposure by 1 to 2 stops over what the meter says. Why? Because the meter tries to make the entire picture into 18% gray and thus you get muddy whites and coal bin blacks. Do some searching about shooting snowy scenes and big white things and you will find what I say is what is recommended by all.

Okay guys, I started a hypothetical Q&A about this many weeks ago, now it's real and factual. Delta announced, effective May 13, that the only electronics permitted in the cabin of an International flight returning INTO the USA will be a cell phone. So no DSLR's or lenses will be permitted in the cabin. Down they go into the luggage area. That seriously impacts many of us this summer, definitely my self and my other half. And please let's not get side tracked by the fact that it was announced only in Cincinnati...today. This will become total reality before May is over. So let's brainstorm about the possibilities.

So if I trim it down to one Canon 5DII body and one L series lenses, I'll be able to take it TO Europe in the cabin, but not on the return. I do not wish to "ship" it back, in fact time prohibits that, for we will be going straight from the ship to the airport. That leaves me with using something like a Pelican case, for the body and lens only, and then to "lock" (?) the case, check it in, and let it travel below the cabin.

What recommendations (or prior experience) can any of you offer for brand/product/model "safe" case that could survive the luggage section? And in our case, we change planes twice, so three planes would be used for the flight back to the states.

I thank you in advance for your responses about a durable case to travel with the luggage.
Okay guys, I started a hypothetical Q&A about ... (show quote)

You will find that most of the big time photogs NatGeos etc use Pelican Cases. Apparently the Samsonite gorilla was traumatized trying to destroy one. I know Art Wolfe does becasue I seen a couple on one of his videos as he was unpacking
