Not so easy, when your husband is hell-bent on getting home! LOL

The only real tricks to shooting from a moving car, aside from NOT being the driver as everyone here has mentioned, is to go low ISO, fast shutter and infinity focus. The closer your angle to the car, the more blur you will capture ... unless that's your intention. The first image I shot with a cell phone, open passenger window, about 80 miles an hour (husband driving), somewhere in the Nevada desert. The second is with my Canon DSLR, through a moving school bus window, about 35 mph, window open, intentional blur to show movement, manual focus in infinity.

Wow! Just cruised the bretedge link to "Summer in the Tetons" workshop and galleries. Fantastic!

I have plans to be there in July next year (I wish it were June, I'd sign up for your workshop right now!)

Thanks for the additional information! I really want to shoot somewhere I've never been before, particularly one of our National Parks ... leaning towards Olympic right now, only because Denali it out of the budget.

bretedge: I see you're from the Moab UT area. One of my favorite places on the planet is Arches. It's an annual trip for my family who lives in SLC, I only get there once every few years now. It never disappoints. I may still have a few photos posted in my web site. (dont judge!) hahaha

Great advice from all! Thanks much. I'm guessing I'll need to begin research (again) to find a good location workshop ... I'll post again then I do.

Maybe UHH should put one together. Wouldn't that be fun. There are many knowledgeable folks here willing to share their knowledge.

Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted, but had a question and immediately thought of this forum for your qualified opinions.

Does anyone have any direct experience with an on-location workshop in which they've participated? Ran? I'm not looking for specific references, just a "was it worth the $1500-$2500+ price tag?"

I suppose I could muddle on in self-teaching mode and buy a new lens instead, or spend some money to get out with a professional and flatten the learning curve. I feel stale-mated and uninspired at present. I know that either a new lens or the workshop would kickstart my engine. If money were no object I'd do both of course and damn the results! ha!

So, what do you think?

Ann...you should post your prom pics!..."Gravity Hill is still a novelty especially for high school kids and tourists....remember Memory Grove?..a few years ago we had a freak tornado hit that area...ripped out trees and eroded the canyon walls....thanks for sharing your memories!

Of course Memory Grove! Lots of good times there. I'll work on finding my yearbooks to see if there is an old prom pic in there. My own were lost, who knows where. It was 1975 ... lots of time since and many miles travelled between then and now. Sometimes though, the best photos ever created are the ones committed to memory. As I recall, my prom date was a hunk and I was stunning beyond measure ... good enough eh?

Plymouth, I sent you an email this morning with two versions of #2, one cropped and the other with the people and stroller cloned out. I'm interested to know what you think. Feel free to post in this thread if you care to share. I didn't want to post without your permission. -- Ann

Nicely done! I echo Billybuzz' comments about a steady hand! Give me a nice sturdy tree or mountain anytime ... they dont move! hahaha :)

For me it's the 1st one!
I might dodge the stem a bit to lighten it a touch, but the bloom pops because of its color and it looks real in this image.

In the darker background, yes it pops, but it appears to be floating in space. The only way I would choose the second over the first is to crop the black background to next to nothing, so the bloom is just about the only thing in the image.

Just my humble opinion ...

I grew up in Salt Lake ... our high school prom was under that rotunda! Took me back a few decades, thanks :) I also recall riding up to the capitol on a 10-speed bike, around "gravity hill" and then on to Citycreek Canyon.

...so thanks for posting these terrific shots and my trip down memory lane.

Thank you jwhphotos :) I think I'll keep it off Facebook though ... my FB pals think I'm a photoshop junkie as it is! You should see what I did to my sister's birthday card! She was going for a multi-generation photograph which I was happy to set up and shoot, but in photoshop I put granny's face on all of 'em! I'm glad she was a good sport about it :P
