[quote=amfoto1]Hi Dave and happy holidays to you too!

Thanks for reply. I did learn the hard way. I suspect that their reputation on eBay & Amazon is good because Amazon and eBay force sellers to play nice because they stand behind the buyer.

Lesson learned. I will be loyal to Adorama, B&H & Canon USA from now on.

Update: I received a full refund from Abe's of Jersey! However, I changed my mind about the 90D. Instead, I decided to get a refurbished Canon 6D Mark II from Canon USA! That camera cost less than the new 90D and I already have 2 crop sensor cameras. I ordered a lens to go with the camera from my friends at Adorama! I got a Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 that I will be using for real estate photos.
I would have surely been happy with the 90D if I got it from a legit dealer, but after talking to friends and realizing I would be better off to go full frame, I think I made a better choice.
Thank again to all my fellow hedgehogs for your posts and for sharing your knowledge. Happy Holidays!!!

Did the fast-talking salesman tell you what kind of memory card he was supplying that would "retail" for $160.00?

A fair question. Yes, he gave me a whole sales pitch about how it can easily record 4K video, is faster, and how I need this with that particular camera, yada yada yada yada, etc. ad nauseam. It would have been a good deal if he sold me the camera with the Canon USA warranty. It would have been a good deal if he wasn't a liar. It would have been a good deal if I bought it from Adorama, as I started to do in the 1st place.

Anyway, my CC company has assured me that I will get my money back one way or another. I lost $30.85 in shipping it back because I was willing to eat that to be done with them. Hopefully between this thread and a facebook post, it will cost Abe more than it did me. So I learned a hard lesson. I hope Abe will learn one too.

I hope Cameta is not gone. I have been to their store, although it was many years ago. They treated me very well.

Back in August I purchased a Canon 80d from Abe’s. I knew it was grey market and decided to go for it. Just as you report I received a call from a salesman. In my case, however, he offered me a non grey market camera for 100.00 more than I had paid.
I opted to take that for 799.00. That price was as low as I had seen anywhere. I received the camera, registered it with Canon, assuring it was not grey.
Since I went in knowing that the item was grey and expecting a call I was not at all unhappy with the end result.
We will never call them Honest Abe but there are still good deals to be had.

Ray,
I think what you might be missing here, is that when I told this salesman to cancel my order, he also promised to give me a non grey market camera, but he LIED. If I could have registered that camera, this thread would never have been written.

Fantom asked if you work for Abe. Your lack of a reply makes me wonder...

Once again, I thank you all for your comments. Several people have strongly suggested that I immediately open a dispute with the CC company. I started to do that, but they advised me to wait up to 15 days and if I have not gotten the full refund by then, I should open the dispute. They assured me that they will stand behind me and that I will get my money back.
I'm no longer sure where I heard good reviews for Abe, but I must be mistaken about it being here. I do know about 42 street camera and other similar crooks, but this is last time I ever try to save a few bucks this way. If I want to save, I might go to Canon for refurbished items, or KEH for used, maybe even eBay. If this thread stops anyone from buying from Abe, I got more than even once I get my refund.

Paraphrasing, someone claimed I came crying back to UHH about my stupid purchase. I don't think that person understood my purpose for this thread. I am more angry at myself than I am at Abe. I'll get over it. Meanwhile, I just want people to know not to deal with them. I'm not crying, I have my big boy pants on and I'll get over it. I hope that person does too.

Hunt’s, KEH, Cameta, Sammy’s, Roberts, and Mikes’s are all excellent as well.

If you are buying used in the future or if your first two choices don’t have exactly what you want, you will need a broader playing field, and all of these are first rate businesses.

Andy

Thanks Andy, but so far B&H and Adorama has never disappointed me and always seem to have what I want. Even in this case, they both had the same camera in stock, but I outsmarted myself thinking I was saving a little money.

Good to know. We use USAA and BofA. USAA has the great reputation and BofA has a good reputation and is one of the 900 lb gorillas in the room. I have been with them since 1966 through all the mergers etc, the first in '98 they got worse, since they have gradually gotten better though in my opinion not as good as pre '98.

Yes, I have USAA also for insurance, but not banking. They are great!

Thanks to all who replied. I appreciate your feedback. My main reason for posting this is to possibly prevent others from making the same mistake I did.
Happy Holidays to all!!!

Absolutely! Have purchased many lenses and a couple of bodies from Canon refurbished... all in perfect condition. Bodies had fewer than 30 actuations on them and lenses were pristine. Check back often because they have sales on different refurbished all the time that come and go quickly.

Canon refurbished might be something I should look at also. At least with them I know I have a warranty and a quality product with no nonsense. This will be my other alternative to B&H and Adorama.

I have had pretty good luck with eBay, but never used them for a major purchase. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

There is a simple solution to all this crap.

Use the power of your bank credit card.

I ran into a scammer deal. I protested the charges and sent the documentation to the bank as to what I did and how I did it. I had all the charges reversed temporarily (it stayed there six months). I followed the bank instructions and in the end I was left with a piece of crap that I did not have to return (the company refused return and refund) and the bank made the reverse permanent.

The bank did not pay either they did was what they call a 'claw back'. (I asked.)

The bank (or credit union) was USAA.

Thanks for your reply Ron. I will just wait a few more days for my refund to come through. If it doesn't I have recourse through the CC company.

Cameta is excellent too.

They include one year warranty free for Nikon refurbs, which Nikon only warrants for 90 days.

I have done business with Camera and they seem to be terrific as well.

Classic. You can also get the same experience from 42nd Street Photo. I’m guessing that the next camera you buy will be from a reputable dealer? Sorry you had to learn this the hard way, but thanks for sharing so hopefully, others don’t make the same mistake.

Thanks for your reply. Never again will I buy gear from people like that. AsI said, from now on I buy only from Adorama or B&H.

Hi and happy holidays to my friends here on UHH. I don't post here often but I do lurk a lot, so I wanted to start out with something positive before I start my rant.
Several years ago, I heard on UHH that Abes of Maine was a good reputable camera store, but I had never dealt with them before. Fast forward to Dec. 12. I was looking for a new camera online and noticed that Abes of Maine, (who I have reason think is actually in New Jersey, if so, just another thing he lies about), had a Canon 90D on sale for about $100 less that everyone else. Their website led me to believe that this was the exact same, brand new 90D I would get if I went to my usual favorite stores, (Adorama & B&H). So I bought it. Within 5 minute I get a call from a fast-talking salesman from Abe's trying to sell me a warranty, a memory card and God knows what else. When I questioned the need to purchase a warranty on a brand new camera, it was only then that I became aware that I had purchased a Gray Market Camera! Now I know some people like to save some money and think that gray market is just fine. After all it is the same exact camera, just without a manufacturers warranty. So if that's what you want, Abe's has it, but they just don't like to talk about it, or the fact that they are not even a Canon authorized dealer! To my way of thinking, that is a deceptive way to do business, and so I immediately told the guy to cancel the sale. He responded by saying that he would 'Upgrade my purchase" by giving me a legit Canon USA camera with full USA warranty, plus a memory card that retails for something like $160 and only charge me an additional $79.00 for the entire deal. He convinced that me this was not a gray market camera, so I said okay. Right after I hung up, I had a bad feeling about this.
The following Monday the package comes. I open the package and find the camera packed in a box that originally included a kit lens, but the lens was removed. I take out the camera, go online to Canon's website to register that camera, and found out that they sold me a gray market camera after all.
I repacked the camera and got on the phone to Abe's of Maine.
After talking to no less than 7 people as I was passed around from one person to another and to voicemail, I finally got someone to help me.
I explained the situation to her no less than 3 times and asked her to send me a shipping label for the return. She said she could not promise that, but would try. Obviously she did not try hard enough, because now it cost me $30.85 to return this item because their salesman lied to me at the time of purchase!!!
Anyway, I sent it back at my own expense, and learned my lesson. From now on I will only buy cameras and the like from Adorama or B&H. Meanwhile, although they sent me an email stating they have issued a refund, as of this moment, my card has not be credited. I was hoping to get that credit in time for me to place an order from Adorama and receive my new camera in time for the holidays. That is not going to happen. If I don't get the refund soon I will file a claim with the credit card company. I would have done that already, but the CC company suggested I wait and give them a chance to do right.
This was supposed to be my xmas present from my girlfriend, so I guess it will eventually be a New Years present, or maybe easter or Yom Kippur! I'll have to wait.

Dave
