I have been flying with my camera gear for 5 years as my personal item. I've not been questioned once by anyone.
I travel with 2 bodies, 4 lenses, tripod, monopod, stabilizer, mic, small LED light, flash defuser, 3 extra batteries and an umbrella.
I've never had any trouble.
