Hi all, thanks for your comments and input. I agree that the pictures are over exposed. Are you saying that if the exposure was correct, then there is no star?

Fred, thanks very much for the link that describes the star effect. I use the Olympus SH1 camera.

Hi,

I took these pictures on 1/4/2017 with different speed settings - 1/13 and 1/20 with exact A and ISO settings. The one on the left has no star/cross along the edge but the one on the right has a lot. I am wondering if it was the speed or something else. Please help and comments. Thanks.

Thanks for the note. I am new to this forum. How can I delete the posting?

Took this picture of the peapot vines in the backyard. The connection of the vines is the subject. It depicts those survival skills that plants possess.

I am asking for comments or suggestion on how to further improve the picture. Technical details: f5.5, 1/400, iso1600, 132'll, some cropping and post processing in PS.

Thanks for making my home state look so pretty!

I like #1 the most because you were able to include a bit more of interest with the foreground.

With your settings, it looks like you could have reduced your ISO but still had a fast enough shutter speed, especially using a 14 mm. Probably ISO of 200 is no issue for your camera?

So, Linda, you mean use ISO100? If so, can you explain what difference it is going to make?

We made a trip to Acadia NP this past September with my high school buddy, who is a photographer. We were told that the sunset at the Pretty Marsh is amazing. It was raining most of the day and we were not sure if we were able to see sunset. But...it turned out to be a different one. I took some nice pictures which I would like to share with you and seek any comment to improve my skill. Thanks a lot.

Hi FramerMCB and ajohnston3, thanks for the comments. I am attaching the original file in this reply for your further viewing.

I did the cropping as you suggested and I like it. Thanks.

I took this picture during absolute low tide at Pottery Cove at St Andrews of New Brunswick, Canada. The sun was setting. The form, pattern and texture of the exposed sea floor is amazing. Olympus OM E-M10 settings: f/8; 1/4000 sec; ISO160; 42 mm; spot metering.

Any comments/inputs to improve the picture is much appreciated!

Should have used f22.

MtnMan, in this cloudy morning and foggy background, using F22 will either I have to bump up the ISO (which might decrease sharpness due to the low lighting as the contour is not very well define anyway) or I have to use longer shutter (which mean I probably have to use a tripod). I know I should have used a larger f-stop. But help me to understand why I have to increase the DOF a lot by using F22 in this foggy day? Thanks.

Beautiful shot.

As for critique, I was wondering what the roots on the lower left did. They are not in the picture, but if they were interesting, and maybe not, but could add balance to the upper right section of the pic.

I guess really, I'm more inclined to post this on my Facebook and let folks think I've shot it (I wouldn't ever). You can't beat getting up early to shoot in places like that.

Manofhg, to your surprise, that aren't any root visible on the ground.

Uuglypher, with all these helpful critiques, I will definitely post more photos to share with you all in the future and asking for critiques. Likewise, I will give my comment to others that asking the same.

Nightski, thanks for the comment. I am amazed how one views a photo from different angle and perspective. I am learning. Thanks for sharing.

mcveed, that's a very good critique about the sharpness of the trunk. I guess either I have to get the focus right on the trunk (same DOF) or use an aperture of 5 or 5.6 if I want to include the tree in the middle of the photo to be "sharp" (longer DOF). Again, thanks for pointing that out to me.
