Gem.....what are your plans for the near term? If you are in a financial position to not have to do anything, that's ideal.....GREAT to have that kind of freedom. If you need to do something to support your home life.....would you mind sharing the process that you've gone through or are going through as part of this journey? Lots of us are reaching that age where these types of decisions will need to be made.....your thoughts might make others' change a bit more organized and less painful as a process.

For me, the change and decision to quit what I was doing was very, VERY easy....but no less painful, due to the administrator I worked for pushing me to move on. But it was time for me to move on down the road......he wanted a raise and by eliminating my salary he could get one and it was "budget neutral"

Congrats on the retirement decision! Now when you consider someones request for a photo shoot, you can charge what you want and the conditions that you'll work under and not worry about getting the job; they can take it or leave it.

I retired almost 2 years ago......this freedom is a very powerful feeling!

I am thinking about getting a monopod for a Canon 70-200 2.8 lens. Is it common to use the lens collar with a monopod or not?

I do, Will....it's just too danged awkward to change the image from landscape to portrait view, with that long stick attached to the bottom of the camera body! Besides, you might hit someone standing near you with the thing.

Why would it leave you speechless ?What do you find in his
work that would want one to call him a master?

There is obviously no ground for discourse with you, Ariel.....our appreciation of skill, artistry, and craft are too far apart....what would be the point of such a discussion? You've already declared yourself to be omnipotent.

Arguing with you would be like dueling with an unarmed man.

dgswan, do not let it bother you.
Ariel not only insulted Ansel but also anyone who happens to like and see value in his work.

We cannot all like the same things.
That is a fact of life and Ariel obviously tries to gain some sort of notoriety by proclaiming to the world that Ansel was an untalented bore.

If you read Ariels posts you will also see that apparently all photographers are just snapshooters pressing a button on a machine.

Apparently painting is a much more worthy pursuit for creative people.

I think its probably a case of -
Those that can ... do.
Those that can't .... teach.
And those that can do neither ...... manage art galleries, and swan around in french berets and black turtle neck jumpers, acting like their opinion counts.

Thanks for the tip off, Lighthouse. I am new to UHH and am here to enhance my understanding of photography......probably wise to avoid that particular personality. There are a number of photographers on here that have been good to read, I've learned good things from many of them....and that's what this is really all about.....not the ugliness.

Wow! You have left me speechless, Ariel! A master, spoken of with such disdain....what sadness.

One suspects the difference between them and AA was not

whose work was of interest only to those who have little
imagination. Safe ,dull ,unimaginative well printed

dull & unimaginative and be thought of as creative by a
host of like minded .

This topic brings to mind a slight correction, that I read long ago, to an old saw that's been around: "Practice makes perfect" is not necessarily so; "Perfect practice makes perfect" is more accurate!

One can "shoot, shoot, shoot, practice, practice, practice, but if you shoot and practice wrong it's only going to give one bad habits. You have to practice shooting correctly. If you don't, you have to learn from your mistakes. Learning from your mistakes is what's going to make you better. That's how I learn. I learn from my mistakes. I really learn fast too. I don't like making the same mistakes over and over. If you're really on the ball, your also learn from other's mistakes too.

You also have to be open to constructive criticism. Put your ego aside. Stay humble. There's always someone out there that's going be better. Even if you're the best at something, you won't be the best forever. There's always going to be some phenom out.

I also pick peoples brains who are good at certain things. Lot of folks have a specialty or strong points in their skills and knowledge. I've been very fortunate to have these people around me.

I have a technical background in television as a technical director. I also play guitar. Hopefully I can combine my technical skills and artistic skills towards photography. It's been a really fun journey. If you really enjoy something, have a passion for it, most likely you'll be pretty good at it.

Whether it's photography, playing music, or life, this is the way I live and learn.

Understand your reluctance, Jerry, but I just bought the same ext backup drive from WD and their support folks were extraordinary! It's a terrific system and I was pleasantly surprised by the tech support....try it, you'll like it!! :) They do a remote access and walk you through what they are doing....it's painless.
