Okay, let me point out - this topic post is directed to those of you who have built-in flash units in your cameras (a practice which seems to be rather rapidly dying out) ... so, if you don't have one - feel free to skip over it ... since any comments you make - wouldn't relate to it ....

Hi Chris,
Lots of replies, but I'll add another. I dislike on camera flash, as most people. I have mine off unless I physically turn it on (never shoot auto). I will sometimes use it as a fill flash along with a regular flash I can hold out and up from me in my left hand (a $5 handle makes holding the flash even easier and raises it bit more). The on camera flash will trigger the regular flash, which will overpower it getting the flash effectively off camera but still with a little direct fill from the camera. This can be good when taking pictures on the fly, where a set-up isn't possible, and the slower shutter speeds, even with a fast lens, don't work. This is especially good indoors, where high ceiling lighting renders lots of facial shadows using available light and bounce flash isn't possible. As an added benefit, you also control the light color.

Best Wishes

Good Morning,
Yes, I bought my d750 refurb from B&H. No regrets whatsoever. Had it now for 2 1/2 years with never a hic-up.

Hello. I have been to Greece a number of times, both alone and taking college students. I don't have any camera tips as I shot with an older Sony bridge camera, but now use a Nikon D750. But I can give you tips on Greece if you are interested in contacting me via PM. Here is a picture of Kotisfou Gorge in southern Crete, taken in 2007 with the Sony when we spent a month in the mountain village of Merthios.
Best wishes on your trip,
Glenn Adams

Should my flash purchase be from the same manufacturer as my camera. Thanks

Not sure of your camera. I bought Neewer flashes for my Nikon d750. All work well. the 2 lower ones ($43) have a fairly high guide number, but are really for use manually. I'm not as pleased with the battery cover on them. Then I bought a higher one ($52) with a v high guide number that syncs well with my camera when put on the shoe. I was amazed when I used it for a wedding reception with it, and I never needed to adjust anything--the camera and flash did all the adjusting for me. I also bought triggers for them ($16) for the set of 1 on the camera and 2 on flashes. Only one is really needed because one flash (even one just from your camera) will set off the others (optical flash mode). It is simple and seems to work easily. No problems with any of them yet. I don't know if any of them will work with settings changed from the camera like a pocket wizzard, as I just have a simple triggering device for my camera. I know neewer has an upgraded triggering device available, but I don't have any experience with it.
As an aside, I would suggest buying high capacity, recharageable batteries for whatever you buy. I found ones on ebay for $13 (4 AA--3300ma + charger). One set lasted for the whole reception mentioned above with charge left in them at the end.

Best of luck.

What is a good portrait software or plug in to use with PS, LR or stand alone. Thanks in advance. JH

Good morning jfholly,
PortraitPro is a good product with lots of features. Unfortunately, as was mentioned by another post, while it works on dng files in windows lightroom (so their literature says), it works on tiff files from lightroom on a mac--huge files--and then will export back into lightroom. Another route to take on a mac is to work from the program itself. It will open dng and nef files. But I prefer to do all my basic, and some not so basic, adjustments in lightroom first, and so end up with the huge tiff files in lightroom.

I bought a set-up recently which is cheap, but works well with my Nikon d750. It consists of neewer wireless trigger and 2 receivers ($15.85) and a couple of flashes Neewer vk750s ($41.83 each). The trigger goes on your camera on the hotshoe and triggers the remotes, which attach to the flashes. They have worked flawlessly for me so far. The links on ebay are as follows:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/311641536330?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

http://www.ebay.com/itm/191660722119?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I would recommend moving up to the next flash. It provides you w ttl if used on camera, which works very well. Not having to adjust every picture in a moving scene for light output is heaven. The camera talks with theflash and they work together for exposure. I have not tried it yet off camera, so I don't know how it will work there. The flashes above (as well as this one) work in manual mode (my trigger/remotes again) or can be triggered optically from the camera flash, ehich can be set so as to not affect the light on the subject.

The link for this one neewer 985n is here:

Best wishes on your search

[quote=leftyRich]Iam tired of dealing with Microsoft, going to buy a new 27 inch I Mac...]
I am a Mac person going back to the Apple IIs and SE30, and am on my second Intel iMac, as well as and ipad Pro etc. I have a 27' with a 3T fusion drive. My next mac will be one with only solid state memory and of course retina. At last look, Apple offered them with up to 1T solid state. It is what I have in my laptop (250gig of it), and it screams. 16gig is probably enough RAM, although I would opt for 32gig plus the upgraded video chip. I consider it more important for what we do (I also do video) than the faster processor, although I went for that as well. Then use fairly fast external drives as primary storage and back-up. I also bought an external optical drive--$80 I think, which can go on my desktop or laptop as needed. Personally, I don't like the keyboard without a numerical keypad--I'm a CFP in my other life--and I do like one with more movement. I use an online service which I think was developed by former apple employees--backblaze. Not too expensive and it backs up your external drive as well as the one in your Mac, and works great for file recovery. I use Kaspersky for my virus protection. I have a plan that allows me to use it on 5 computers. They even have a free one for use with iPads. I use the cc bundle, which I found for $8 mo. for photoshop and lightroom. While you are there, download the NIK software for free at google. Macphun has some nice stuff for macs--and some free filters they are offering now. If you have any other specific questions, please feel free to PM me.
Best of luck,
Glenn

There is a camera sold on wish.com which looks like a power pack. 3000 milliwatts power. 720 p video, or stills with the motion detection. The cam lasts for 8 hours on video and a 16 g card. Costs about $35 from the east--so it sill take a while to get there. Card extra. Actually works as a power pack as well. Cam not too bad in marginal light. No night stuff on it.

It depends on what sort of quality you want. I looked long and hard before committing my family 8mm to someone (as well as my father-in-law's). I wanted to do it once w high quality. I settles on debenham media in Coriapolis PA, just outside of Pittsburg. I visited them and watched them work. Film is spliced onto big reels and cleaned. Then each segment is color corrected and then recorded. While DVD is a cheaper option, it is a much lower quality one. I had them load everything onto a hard drive--very efficient for editing. The quality is over 1080p. Subscequent jobs were loaded onto the same drive. You will find them online at mymovietransfer.com and at 800-865-7172. Tell Gregg the coffee guy sent you.
You can pm me here with any other questions--soshootme
Good luck.

The Blue Angels came to Rochester, NY this summer. The article talks about Lt Ryan Chamberlain. Here he is getting ready to climb into his plane. I just sent this picture in to WHCC to make a metal print for my daughter for Christmas. She spent 5 years in the Air Force as a fuel systems mechanic.

[quote=JD750]There was a Post almost identical to this on Sept 14 titled "iOS photos" by Effjayess. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-337023-1.html

Thanks. My laptop has updated itself miraculously, but my iMac hasn't yet--still hopeful. I'll try your links and hope for the best. Looks like you are also shooting with a D750. Great camera. Now if I can only afford lenses.

Glenn

I have Yosemite 10.10.5 and my Aperture 3.6 opens and works just fine. So maybe you did miss something although I have not done anything special that I recall.

Ahhh. Mine is 3.5.1. Now I'll have to see if I can upgrade that to 3.6, if the gods smile on me today. Best wishes and thanks for the help.

Aperture will still function in Yosemite. I forget the steps needed to do that, but if you use the search function at the top of the page I'm sure you'll find it.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll work at it and figure it out.

Your discovery is not new and the demise of Aperture has been discussed in a number of threads in the last few months.

Yes, I have followed the discussion, which is one of several reasons I have moved to Lightroom over the past few months. But I figured we would be able to continue to at least use aperture, which contains many thousands of pictures. I am in the process of converting them to Lightroom now.

I just upgraded to Yosemite, apple's new os for my imac. Now my Aperture won't open--says it needs to be upgraded in the App store, which App store says it is no longer available. I sort of understand Apple deciding to deep six a fine program they have decided not to continue to support. But to make it unworkable on the new system seems shortsighted and quite frankly a pain in the pocketbook. I am converting all my aperture files to lightroom, but there are things I would still do in Aperture that are superior to Lightroom. So a warning to all hogs--if you want to continue to use Aperture, don't upgrade to Yosemite---unless I'm missing something.
