Hello

I am considering this tripod - 3 Legged Thing Punks Brian Carbon Fibre Tripod - $299.00

Has anyone has any experience with this brand? I want to solidly and securely support a full frame with a telephoto lens. Reviews seem mixed.

thanks

What camera and lenses do you have or are planning to use? Perhaps it makes sense to use what you have and start with a means to track and to see if you like doing this? It is possible to get nice images with camera lenses.

And also, be aware that not all telescopes can be used for astrophotography. The telescope MUST have sufficient back focus to allow the camera to achieve Prime Focus. To use any other way of attaching a camera such as Eyepiece Projection is just not as good.

Here is the comet Neowise last July as seen with a 55mm lens and an APS-C camera. Images were 8 sec each at ISO 3200 with a number of them stacked. Tracking was not used.

The 2nd image is also not tracked. I used an AstroTech AT60ED scope, which is a very inexpensive scope that has sufficient back focus that a camera can be attached. The scope has a focal length of 360mm at f6. I also did not use tracking for this image. Exposure time was 2 sec and ISO 25,600 and a number of images were stacked.

Next, I will show you one that was using tracking of M51. I used the same AstroTech scope. This time, 15 sec stacked at ISO 1250. Again, multiple images stacked.

As a beginner, its best to not start with a big telescope. It is expensive and takes more skill to get good images. Start small.

4th image is m101 using the same AstroTech scope with same settings as previous.

5th image is NGC6341 with same settings.

I need a second camera body and my decision is around Nikon D610 , big screen , light weight , I read very few comments on this camera that supersedees D600 .
I like to have some comments on it and I can choose an alternative too , used of course .
Your comments are welcome

I have a D610. Overall it's been good. But one area that is not good is the lack of a true exposure simulation in live view.

Hello

I want to view the moon, planets, stars etc. Budget is less than 1k.

- What type of scope?
- What brand?
- What do I avoid?

Or is a budget of 1k a waste of money and do I need to wait until I can spend more?

Confused

You can tether with Lightroom Classic but not with the newer Lightroom CC (cloud version), both of these and Photoshop are part of an Adobe subscription.

There is no exposure preview of the image when you tether in Classic, you take the picture and it's appears in LR Classic. It does allow you to change the setting though so you could do that, repeat image capture until it's what you want. Also, you might want to look at DSLR Controller, a free program for Windows, if you are on Windows. I have used it before and it's good. As you change settings on the camera, via the program's interface, the changes are previewed.

Also, there are some free tethering apps for Android.

I read some post here from a couple of years ago where most people preferred LR Classic. Is that still the case or has LR CC caught up enough?

thanks

Thanks to everyone, turns out it the adapter that came with the lens was a Minolta mount. After I got it I bought a Nikon t adapter for 10.00 to use the lens with my D610. I wish I'd never bought the lens, I should have known better, you get what you pay for.

The moon was 3/4 full and I had my D610 at ISO 100, 1/60 ss, F8 (the lens is F8). Pictures of the moon are dim.

Anyone have any suggestions? Higher ISO, much longer shutter speed, sell the lens :).

thanks

I think your D750 allows you to preview effects of changes to aperture, iso, shutter speed in live view like the evf on a mirrorless does. My D610 does not and I don't know if the cameras you are considering do either.

I have a manual adapter that allows me to use a Canon 17-40L lens on a Sony a6000. The adapter is cheap, has no af, no aperture control. And as you know, the lens has no way to set the aperture manually.

I've read different things about this. Some say that the lens will be wide open, others say it will retain the last aperture value it was at, i.e. that I can set the aperture using a Canon body and that will be the aperture when the lens is mounted on the A6000. Does anyone know for sure?

thanks

I went from d3200 to d610 a couple of years ago. Great camera with one exception - live view. Exposure changes are not reflected on the live view monitor immediately. I have found no work around for this. I think higher end Nikons and all Canons and mirrorless do have exposure preview.
