These shots were taken at a very emotional sunset vigil.

Canon 7D, Canon 50mm/1.2

I shoot political events with this combination, because you can record the moment without becoming part of the moment, and nothing isolates people like a 1.2. Even though the bokeh isn't as sweet as the 85, it's still pretty nice, and it really focuses quickly and accurately, so you don't miss as many shots as you do with the pokey 85. Because I was constantly moving around and wanted the isolation, I used AV mode at f/1.2, spot focusing and center-weighted and spot metering.

I was a participant of this event as well, and I can assure you that my face looked just like theirs; of the other photographers, news reporters and videographers, I didn't see any unaffected.

Just curious, what are you basing that statement on?

That's easy, there's more Canon on the market because they've outsold Nikon for decades. Doesn't make Canon any better, just better marketers.

Fanboys. Sigh.

I'm new to digital. Have a Canon A-1, AE-1 and F-1 with a variety of some good lenses. I had a darkroom in my mothers basement but strictly B&W. I considered myself an "Advanced Amateur" When I left home in 1980 I packed the camera's and darkroom equipment up and haven't touched it since. Now 35yrs later I want to get back into photography...digital photography. Doing a little reading/research I've narrowed down my choices to two beginner cameras. Canon T5i or Nikon D3300. Will any of my old prime lenses work with any of these DSLR's? Canon vs. Nikon? What about a beginner/inexpensive printer? Is there a market for any of my old cameras and lenses or should I pack them up to show my great grandchildren in 20 or 30 years?

I went through this in 2007, and ended up with Canon; at the time, they had the best equipment for what I was buying.

Canon and Nikon both take wonderful photos with experience. Right now, Nikon's APS-C bodies pretty much smoke Canon's, in full frames it's closer, but still Nikon, and pro bodies the edge goes to Canon.

For lenses, good Nikon lenses are a LOT more costly than Canon. If you're getting low to midrange it doesn't matter as much.

Based on what bodies you're looking at, Nikon has the definite edge; more resolution and less noise. Don't get all emotional about inanimate objects. If you buy Nikon today and decide to upgrade to semipro gear in 4 years and Canon's got the smoking equipment, dump your Nikon like an old sock. It's those round orbs and the grey matter that controls them that make great photos, the equipment is just a tool.

Once you spend a bunch (like me), you're pretty much stuck. My next body is the 5D3, and I might choose that even if I didn't have this legacy gear around my neck; it fits my shooting needs and style better than the D800, but if I were buying a new crop, I'd most certainly pick Nikon.

To add to the peanut gallery, my favorite lens is my 50mm 1.2. Amazing.
