I have this vague notion that you have just explained why automation assisted exposure can get tedious and distracting compared to the light and breezy simplicity of old school DIY exposure.

Well stated !
Oh - the tyranny of our pursuit of the latest and greatest…

I apologize publicly (and will now do so privately, to the OP) for sarcastic comments I posted in this thread.

The idea of checking batteries in luggage is a hot button for me - BUT there is no excuse for my negativity. I could and should have provided my opinion on this issue constructively. I am sorry.

Such a snarky answer. No need for this here.

Not as snarky as my comment !
Plus I used big words like ‘temerity’ and titillating phrases like ‘dangerous irresponsibility’ !

Remind me never to fly with you or a member of your family.

You display a fascinating combination of temerity and frankly dangerous ignorance.

Let me start with your nerve (a synonym for temerity, in case Google Translate isn’t working for you yet today):

I can handle your evidently serious expectation of reimbursement for valuables packed in checked language and I can even tolerate your whining - by simply laughing (‘at’ - not ‘with’ by the way).

But your ignorance is coupled with incredible irresponsibility - do you really put spare batteries in checked luggage ?!?!?!
Shame on you !

I apologize - to the UHH community - but emphatically not to the OP - for my sarcasm and anger.
I don’t know what planet the OP
has been living on - but this battery issue is over the top.

After recovering from a badly broken left wrist… I have sold/traded in all of my gear for a simple but powerful Ricoh GR III. Built in IBIS, ND filter, fixed lens with built in lens cover, live histogram, focus peaking and electronic level, and best of all, designed for one handed shooting….post.

Great camera ! I bought one two years ago and I love it.
By the way, Ricoh makes accessories including viewfinders.

Ignore the (mainly) ridiculous comments your post elicited.
Of course “it’s the photographer, not the gear”!

Having said that - the GRiii is a true snob camera - the fact that there are few posts here demonstrate that - and that’s fun too !

Does anyone use Slik Photos ? It is a privacy-focused on-line storage service that offers end-to-end encryption and a few other bells & whistles.
I happened across reference to it today in DP Review (I think in the article about the new Macs released this week).

Um....what sort of a discussion were you hoping to generate?

Actually - as evidenced by multiple responses - this is a relevant subject - especially as we are thankfully getting out of our pandemic-induced travel phobia. Great to see all the recent and current and planned travel by so many of our members.

We spent 10 days in May in southwest US national parks - Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion.
I brought my 18-135mm zoom and my light 15mm prime - wise decision. I used both, would do the same again.
(I shoot with an APS-C Pentax dSLR.)

I would like to share my very fresh experience. Two days ago I returned from 3 weeks, 4000 miles road trip from Quebec city to Newfoundland. Spent 11 days in Newfoundland, crossing it from West to East. I took with me Z7 with Z 24-200 and Z6 with Z 20mm F1.8 S. These two cameras easily fit in by Lowepro Nova bag. I thought I might need 20mm for the situations when 24mm was not wide enough and also for a possible nightscapes. So, I brought home 830 images taken with 24-200mm and only 100 images taken with 20mm. I am now confident that I could easily leave 20mm at home as I really needed it only once when shooting inside the dark Irish pub. All the rest I could easily take with 24-200mm. I like taking pano shots and 24-200mm does this well. Next time I will take Z7 with Z 24-200 and also little pancake Z 28mm f2.8 for a night shots.
I would like to share my very fresh experience. Tw... (show quote)

I have a Canon Vixia camcorder with ...generic batteries. Because they are not Canon batteries, the camera doesn't show me the amount of time available on them...

I think the last sentence is the key question. If remaining charge was not disabled, would this be as much of an issue ?

BTW - I wonder if this varies by brand ?
This is not my experience with my Pentax DSLRs and Ricoh GRiiii.

Similar question.
I bought a Canon Pixma printer 5+years ago. From a major national seller (B&H). Full warranty etc. Never used, in fact I never opened the carton. It is still sealed in the carton. (Purchased just prior to our move from the house we had lived in for 25 years, so major work in downsizing and i never got to it.)
Is there any hope ?

This is a 2000x2000 pixel section taken from a larger image.
No adjustments, no resizing, no sharpening, no nothing, straight from the camera....
You will literally need to shoot lines and conduct tests to see any difference as demonstrated earlier in this thread.
I'm sticking with my DSLR! The world can go crazy and convince themselves they are doing things they never could before. Good luck to them!

Well put !
