Get a cheap tripod NOW if:
You do any landscapes(slow film/ low ISO=long exposures) you will come to love low light shots at dawn and dusk because that's where the most dramatic
pictures are ( low light = long exposures).
You want people to think" he must be a pro,he's got a tripod", often hilarious in your 1st year.
If your passion is action shots, and kids,you might not want one.
All a tripod does is eliminate camera shake,and even a cheap one helps. Mine was @ $30.00, and one day I'll upgrade.

Hope you're still checking this thread. I'm a rank amateur and I've always used a uv filter cause the 1 class I took suggested it. For me, I'm more at ease cleaning filter glass than the lens glass. I stick with $20 filters because that's my budget, I buy Hoya,tamron,tokina . I'd rather scratch a filter than the lens. I've not shooting such great shots that I'm thinking the filters holding me back.Sleeping late ruined more shots than anything,impatience the next most. If you're in Alaska, stand in the river and don't worry about water on the lens,or sand.
