I'm racking my brain trying to remember what this company was called when they first started out. I bought their first software, but can't remember what it was called way back then. For my piece of mind, before I got nuts, can anybody answer my question?

Please email me at 'BikerRally@gmail.com for the fastest answer. Thank you very much.

You are simply ignorant of the difference and insist on us accepting ignorance for fact. Not going to happen. Again, you are wrong. I did read the article and it doesn't say what you assert. So, you are wrong not only about the two programs but the article. I think they call that 3 strikes.

My! What a sore loser. :)

There is no way that LR is a sub for PS...that's just ludicrous.

I have and use both, they are two different animals, both useful in their own way.

Read the link.

Same for all reply's here ... nobody read the link. Why do I even bother? So many hard-headed people here that it's no wonder that I only stumble back here in a blue moon. Anybody got a 'blue moon' image to post? That would cheer me up. Aw, so much for a 'sharing' and 'helping' forum. Post a blue moon and I'll be back ... or post a middle digit, that would tickle me as well. :)

No comparison, I use both. I was in the commercial printing business for 40 years in the prepress division and have been using photoshop since it first came available and there is nothing that comes close to all that it can do, there is a reason that it is "The King" and is the reason all others try to emulate. Besides Adobe isn't stupid why on earth would they make LR a replacement for PS they have Two Different Revenue sources.

Can you do 'soft proofing' with PS? You now can with LR4. And everything you do in LR4 is non-destructive. You don't even have to think about it ... it's just there. I guess I wasted my time in posting the link. Nobody read it. :(

I cannot do what I do with Lightroom. Too slow, too many round trips to Photoshop to do things LR cannot even come close to doing. Layers, blend modes, blend if, layer masks, actions that are FAR more powerful than those presets in LR, and a bunch of other things. Of course part of it is just experience and proficiency.
Now, LR is a fantastic bit of software, but a substitute for PS? Not even close. I have it and last time I used it was four or five months ago - it is just too slow.
I do thing version 4 has made some great strides in addressing the weaknesses in 1 through 3.

Again. Read the article. It has to be LR4. It will do all that you need to do with any image and it will do it better than PS. I will try and post a link to a 'Kelby Training®' that I have on the new version 4 of LightRoom. It is a very comprehensive tutorial (about 4 hours) on how to use the new LR4. You won't believe it until you try it. And no, I don't work for either Kelby® or Adobe®.

I don't think someone that needs PS will ever be able to substitute LR for it unless LR is greatly expanded in capabilities. I use both but for different reasons. Processing raw files and cataloging everything is LR for me. Special work and extensive editing is in PS for sure.

There may be some cannibalizing going on but not a lot, in my opinion. I have never heard of someone that really knew how to use PS and its incredible capabilities drop it for LR. I tend to believe LR was a move to stave off lost sales to competing products where PS was just too robust. I think they are a near perfect set of tools that work synergistically with each other.

Did you read the post? I hate to sound surly, but the article explained it perfectly. One can now do it ALL in LR4 ... it has to be LR4, the older versions don't have enough powder. But this will all change because as I stated, Adobe created a problem for itself that they didn't foresee? Right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing? So, you are right afterall. You will need both. It's just a matter of time. Either keep your old versions or update later when they split the programs out again. :)

Here, finally, is an answer to a question I've had for months now. Even asked it a couple of times on this forum, but could never receive an 'adequate' answer. I even caved in and bought LR4 about a week ago ... and now I find this on another (sorry 'bout that) forum: http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/photoshop-cs6-beta-and-lightroom-4.html I'm only posting in the hope that this info will help others, for a while anyway. Like the author of this article, I'm deeply invested in Photoshop with 'tons' of PSD files. But it looks like now the direction is LR and NOT both, as Adobe would like it. Now, how WILL Adobe handle their own, newly created problem for revenue? Of course! They'll start 'tearing' the two into separate programs again. How simple. Watch for the new Adobe Advertising Campaign, coming to a website near you soon. (Adobe ... we need a 'sarcasm' font really bad). ;~)

Erin is okay, but he's not among the top instructors. He just has some supposedly magic stuff, and he is a completely likable guy. Now you're on the right track ... where you don't have to do all kinds of hokus pokus to download a file to your HD through a middle man site. But keep looking, there is much better/quality videos out 'there' that will teach you 'photography' and not just tricks. Maybe after a good nights sleep, I may not be so cranky.

I've seen a lot of bad videos on how to do stuff in photoshop, so it's not easy to do. You did a really great job of explaining it-clear and to the point. Nicely done!
Can you get two pictures side-by-side like that in PSE? It would be really useful.

Unfortunately, you're not going to the right web sites. There are multitudes of Photoshop® videos where a person can completely learn Photoshop® from just these videos alone. Frankly, the video you refer to is a link to a website where you have to do an additional 'middle-man' download of the video. And the video is not that good and takes up space on your HD. Sorry, maybe they are a friend of yours, but that video is not very professional. Yes, I am ranting here because of the 'cliques' on this forum. Very unconducive to learning unless you are in the 'in' crowd. A very large 'Boo!'.

Kep it coming. You provided useful info here and to me yesterday. I also checked out your pics; wow! Very nice!!! We can learn a lot from you!!!

Thanks Fran, but I am no 'guru'. I'm retired and this is just a hobby ... and if I can generate a dollar or two, that's always nice.

I have noticed over on the 'thread' with your image that people are continuing to 'display their acumen with puffed out chests', but not one will tell how. It's all so secret. It's one on the things that bothers me about this forum. However, I have found ALL forums (no matter the subject) to be the same. (sigh).

Ok. Pie Hole Open. I've received several 'private' messages that claim I am 'giving away the store'. There are just some people out there that derive more pleasure out of being the 'current go-to guru' than they get from their art. True, very true, it does take a long time (a very steep learning curve) in any of Adobe's software. So they question '... why should I give away all that I so laboriously learned?' Well, I think that this forum was founded on the principle of 'helping'. If I'm wrong tell me that, and tell me out in the open. No more private messages. People --- use every resource that is available to you on the 'net'. A vast majority of it is free. 'Seek and ye shall find'.

I'm in the 'Quick Reply' box, so this will be brief:

One can almost completely learn 'Photoshop' not only on this forum but also on 'YouTube'. And it's all free. Take advantage of the tutorials on 'YouTube' as well.

There. I have shut my pie hole!
