I'm planning on getting a new computer after Christmas. Started with a PC, then switched to Apple. So probably will stay with Apple. Actually, this post has nothing to do with cameras or computers, but instead is to bid all of you a good-bye. I've been a member of this forum for several years and have made friends with several of you. Lately, I have grown weary of where this forum is headed and you can read between the lines. It has become too much of a passionate rant from both sides and the owner of the forum exacerbates this bias through his own agenda and slant. I'm trying to make this as generic as possible so certain keywords don't get picked up by the algorithm trolls and the posting gets taken down. I have realized during the events of the past few months that I have been spending way too much time on this website. My wife was helpful enough to make me realize this because every time she walks past the computer, she sees the yellow screen. I kept time and realized she is correct, in that I spend at least 1.5 hours per day on this insidious trap. So tomorrow, I will no longer sacrifice my soul and bow down to the great god hedgehog. I have learned a few things about human nature from posters on this website and that's that we are highly emotional about our equipment, whether cameras or computers. But in the end, it's what we are comfortable with and how much time the choices remove from our lives. In the end, the very end, my grandkids and wife are the most important things on this earth to me and I want to spend more time with them, with less interruptions trying to answer a posting, rather than playing Uncle Wiggly. Hopefully this posting will stay up long enough for many of you to read it and do some serious soul-searching of your own too. I have noticed a lot of posters from the past year are no longer present. So good bye and have a merry "seasonal event" and happy holiday.

iPhone and iPad, where my manuals reside, have batteries. No need for Internet as the pdfs are saved in Books App.

My RV, which is parked next to the house when I'm not galavanting, has a good size generator if needed. Or I have inverters to power off the batteries. One of my autos even has one built-in. And of course all now have usb ports. But our power outages, which are relatively frequent due to weather and fires (fires usually caused by hawks arcing out the wires but snow can upset things), only last a few hours at most. Usually the Internet stays up but isn't accessible because modem power is out. No cell service where I live. If I really feel Internet deprived I can drive the 14 miles to town and use it on my Cell or new iPad...unless the one road is blocked for fire fighting.

Perhaps more importantly my need for the manuals is very infrequent. I've been a Nikon user for over five years and although I get the latest cameras from time to time (Currently Z6 and Z50) the menus and controls don't change much. I also have a little Lumix (GM5) which I use infrequently and thus have to access it's manual more often. I'm going to send it down the road though as the Z50 does its job better.

That's good for you, but the majority of us don't have generators in our backpackers out on the road or on a job site.

I will tell you that I never shoot off a bean bag because if it rests on the focus or zoom rings the focus/zoom can be changed with very subtle movements that you are NOT aware of ! - using the R5 may in some way exacerbate this over the 5DM4 ??

Excellent point. Same with the window sill in a car. Or holding the lens ring with your fingers, like a prissy teacup.

Our perilous time tests the sober mind.

Facts and information otherwise trustworthy fall into question. Rumormongers gain the spotlight. The news media worsens the condition by its practice of lies, bias, and propaganda. The public finds itself in the hands of typists who string words together for interesting sentences. Falsity results.

Half the story presents as enough to support an opinion or a conclusion in the popular awareness. A swirl of voices becomes a siren stealing attention. One-sidedness rules the flow of verbiage and images in the public dialog, producing national division.

More than ever, in this confusion the individual must think for himself. The tools of critical thought can counter the rampant falsity and expose the flawed assumptions that purport to direct us to the right end.

Our human intellect can sift and sort things for a rational order. The thinker Ayn Rand points the way: "We have only reason to guide us in this life."

Excellent. I wish I had the ability to say what you just said. I can only copy quotes from others:

"As I grow older , I regret to say that a detestable habit of thinking seems to be getting a hold of me."
H. Rider Haggard, King Solomon's Mines

“The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.” George Orwell

I worked in a major pharmaceutical company for 36 years before retiring. ALL of our liquid and freeze dried products were overfilled to make sure that the customer got the minimum dose. The overfills cost us millions, but it was a necessary process step. This is not news, but something that the new media wants to take off and run with because right now the vaccine is news and anything related to it is "news". Not a major discovery to anyone in the medical industry

The first thing I do when I get strange emails is click on the sender’s address which expands to the actual address. If it doesn’t have the original organization’s name in the address I report it and then toss it.

Me too, but this one was an actual window that opened up on my computer. The hackers are getting more sophisticated so that they can insert malware onto your screen to make it look like it's coming from Apple.

I prefer manuals. I am very technical (build and maintain computers). I refuse to have a smart phone. I do not want to be "connected" when I am out. Besides, you can hardly see the screen in the sunlight. I also refuse to have a camera that does not have a viewfinder. Yes, you can call me "old"............ I do have a cell phone for emergency use. I have texting blocked on it. If people wish to contact me, they can call me, leave a message or email me.

good for you....I think I am heading that way myself. This stuff is getting too complicated for me to keep up with.

Yes, computers have changed this operation. Years ago, teams of technical writers would take a device or piece of software, learn how to use it, interview the designer and then write a users manual. Secretaries would type it and format it into a manual. Today, the designer does a lot of this documentation as they design it and then either the designer or sometimes a technical writer, or product manager using a word processor types it and builds a user manual. Technical writers are still around but in much smaller numbers. This job is often done by a product manager who has a technical background but often works in marketing or sales.

The same thing happened to secretaries. Before computers, secretaries typed all correspondence and documentation inside the company. When computers and word processors came on the scene, most people in the company started typing their own correspondence , often using email to send it. In many small companies secretarial positions disappeared completely. The small company I worked for had 8-10 secretaries when I hired on in 1985. By the time I retired 33 years later the company was larger but the number of secretaries was zero.

If all those secretaries were gone, then who did the bosses fool around with?

I agree. The shelters have become too maniacal and are run by do-gooders out to save the world. Far easier to adopt a human baby than to adopt a dog. Do what your son suggests

Please stop the negative view of life for your own well being and the state of mind of the rest of us. It seems like you lead a ‘doom and gloom’ life with every post either a problem or complaint. Think positive thoughts, for your own benefit. I no longer feel sympathy but genuine worry about your state of mind. I suggest more time on the ukelales and less on the computer.

I have been following this post for the past few days and with every new post, unfortunately yours always comes up in the mix. Hopefully with a few more posts, the new ones will move yours to another page, where it won't be viewed any longer. There are hundreds of us that just happen to like Jerry's posts, so I suggest you go chill out in front of the fireplace with a bottle of Jack Daniels and mellow. Then if you are still concerned about Jerry's well-being, please consult a psychiatrist and ask him why you have this overly parental need to control. I am certain that you could start a "Go Fund Me" page and get a lot of contributions from the UHH readers to pay the bill.
