I want to start a Nikon/Canon war....again
I envy and pity you at the same time.
Here is one I see sometimes. Weather we go or stay does not matter.
Not trying to ruffle your feathers. $5400.00 is not like buying a pair of socks.
I have both lenses using a 1DmarkIV. Gone to just using the Tamron.
My wife and I went to the 9:30pm show Sunday night. Including us, there were seven people in the whole theater. The Dallas Morning News gave it a B+ so I thought it might be good and I liked the previews. It was Noah/Hobbitt/artsy dream something/screaming baby delivery/kitchen sink all over the map trying to appeal to all audiences. Monday morning the paper said it did 44,000,000 in sales and was top dog for the week. Better enjoy it while they can. As for my review, a "D" would be generous.
buyer beware. op just joined.
Check out precision color when you get tired of buying the Canon cartridges. I bought their kit and think it is a very good value. Check out their website. It will make you realize how little ink Canon sends you.
Buy the best available at this time. That would be the 600. Some suggest the 430 which is fine. There is not much money difference between the two.

twillsol, you did right by staying quiet. Didn't ruffle any feathers and perhaps your friend will be sporting a new lens.

I agree with sharpshooter and Jim Neiger about their choices for birds in flight photography. Other options will work but the op asked for the best.
"Also be aware that these recording may be discourteous to fellow birders and photographers. ."
I may be guilty of that. I was playing a warbler call and another birder came running around the bend like his rear was on fire. Asked where the bird was. Told him I heard it but didn't see it. Which was true.
