Is a fast burst {5 fps or better} most likely to yield that one image??

With birds the faster the better to stop action. Stopping action isn't a problem most of the time with me, it's getting a photo of the bird in the right position to work with the outstretched wings. It's amazing how fast bird's wings beat. Sometimes I can get several pictures of the wings in different sequential positions and layer them in to show action. Other times no matter now many fps. I only get folded wings or out of focus ones. I know a guy who videos birds, isolates the stills, and produces the most beautiful motion pictures of birds in flight. A little out of my range of abilities.

Thanks so much for the tip! Someone mentioned to me using the clone tool to add flowers (very low opacity) in a background, and I never made the "big" leap to birds' wings

I've taken 300 or more pics of birds in flight hoping to get one or two that I can do the ghost wings with. It works best with wings fully extended up, in front or down. I'll try to find a couple in my archives to show you. I don't remember what names I gave them.

[quote=Scruffy]Yooper2, you "otter" have known better! I always enjoy your photos, and look forward to your future posts.[/quote

Thanks Scruffy. I 'otter' have known better, I agree. But it can 'beaver'y' hard to distinguish beavers, otters and muskrats from each other when they're swimming flat out.

Thank you for your feedback, Julann. I'm always appreciative of your sharp eye! After I posted, I was actually thinking of blurring the wings further (for the motion). Your suggestion might be easier to attempt once I purchase a Wacom

Your time and interest is very much appreciated!

You can easily do it with a mouse with practice. I use my mouse for small jobs. Sometime try ghosting in the wings in several positions to show motion. It can be done with the clone tool set at low opacity. It works really nice with very sharp photos.

Beautiful! It makes me want to enter the scene and see what's at the end of the boardwalk.

I like #1 the best. Your daughter looks quite glamorous in this version. The other two are nice but a bit too harsh for my taste.

My In Focus has never worked. No help from Topaz. Clarity is also problematic. I've been using Topaz for about 6 years.

All are very appealing but I do like the second one the best. Your technique is so effective on flowers.

This topic will have several requests and presentations; please don't feel you have to comment on all photos.

1. Thanks once again to ebrunner for the natural abstract thread and more recently to Laurence68 for keeping the idea in my mind to look for the unusual in nature.

2. Thanks to Islandgal for her topic on texture libraries, and to MinnieV for her continuing guidance regarding use of textures. I now have two of my own photos in my folder of textures - a cool cloud formation shot from my balcony.

Your feedback regarding any or all, suggestions for pp or cropping, or for future similar photo ops (e.g. use manual focus and a tripod, stupid ) would be appreciated. Edits are welcome.

Thank you!

The look of water in different lighting conditions always fascinates me. I like these just the way they are. They look very natural yet abstract - especially #1.

Many thanks to UHH user camerapapi for urging me to try the digital zoom of my new OM-D E-M10 Mark II Mirrorless. It's awesome!

These are the Wilson's Snipe species (related to woodcock in eastern U.S.), with 2x digital zoom using Olympus M.Zuiko Digital Ed 75-300mm lens.

1/1000 sec, f/8, auto-ISO. Slightly cropped and edited from jpg, using Topaz Detail and a few Nik filters.

Thanks for viewing!

#1 slightly textured
#2 more texture
#3 - silhouette fanciful [/quote

Beautiful captures! I like the second one the best because they're usually seen at dusk and after dark.

Going for painterly, but not aggressively; using textures but not in-your-face. Hoping for a feeling of anticipating the next moment in time. Suggestions, feedback, edits welcomed. Thank you!

Yellow-headed blackbird in the marsh.

A beautiful action shot. It looks like a painting. I would have painted in the edges of the wings and cloned out the blur of the sky since the rest of the bird is quite sharp. Maybe easy for me to say since I'm an artist. These and Redwing Blackbirds are difficult to capture since they are so flighty. You did a great job.

I like the snow version best too. The flowers are quite pretty close up. It's always interesting to watch the same subject it changes with the seasons.

This is a series of shots of a very sophisticated Dahlia. She is a great model and will work tirelessly for a cool drink of water.

I hid behind a Pine Tree watching the den opening. There was no action for quite a while. When I gave up and left the tree, I came face to face with a kit. It looked frightened, so I immediately sat down, to appear smaller and less of a threat. To my surprise, it approached me out of curiosity for a few minutes. I then got a few shots at a distance of the family goofing off. Hope you enjoy. Gary

Beautiful captures and a very enjoyable series. Love the last one.
