Have the Canon EF 75-300mm telephoto lens. Will I be happy with the clarity of the Vivitar 2x teleconverter for Canon? The reviews seem to be mostly positive and the price is great if it really works.

The first photo was about 1 hour after sunset. What I liked about it was the reflection of the Moon in the lake and Venus which was very bright to its upper right. ISO was 400, aperture was f4 and shutter speed was 1/2 sec. The second photo is looking towards the Cascades with Agency Lake Oregon in the foreground. The only benefit from all our forest fires seems to be the sunsets we have.

Love the sunset with the reflection in the lake.

My daughter & I have a similar passion for photography.
I gave her my D3100 when she started her new job last year. Well it was a good excuse to get myself a new D3200.

She took this image about 350 miles southeast of New Orleans while onboard the CGG Viking research vessel.

She is a Marine Biologist, yep an Aggie.

Proud of her and her love of photography

Love storm photos; displays the power and majesty of nature. Here's a favorite storm photo of mine.

While camping in the Chama, NM area this guy came within about 50 yards of the RV park we were at. Kinda cool catching a shot of a bear in the wild.

Love the color! I have always enjoyed my infrequent encounters with bears.

As a newbie, I would love to have your opinion as to which is the better shot, the first one that highlights the squirrels head, or the second one in which he more blends with the tree. Thanks.

I added a third shot of him after the fact.

Nice! I like the smaller mammals...

Caught this spider on a leaf in the lake this evening. Does anybody know what kind he is?

The color and the reflection of the legs make it an amazing image.

Gannett Peak is the highest peak in Wyoming, and located in the Wind River Mountain Range, at 13,804 feet. It has five rugged glaciers on its flank, the largest glaciers in the American Rocky Mountains. This view was captured during a horse packtrip in the Fitzpatrick Wilderness in 2003.

The tree on the right in the foreground gives the picture depth; frames it nicely. Better than if you just shot a lovely mountain landscape.

Unless you think you need a 70-150 lens why consider getting both? If you want a superior quality lens for not a lot of cash the Tamron 70-300 vc for about $350 net after rebate you really can't go wrong. One professional reviewer (Bob Atkins) did a comprehensive review comparing it to the Canon and rated it better in overall sharpness. It is the lens I use almost every day.

Learning a lot. That's just what I need at this stage as I contemplate purchasing in another couple of months. Things to all you UHHs.

Hey Gordon,
I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V that I never use: I'm into Panasonic (Lumix FZ200) and just bought a new Nikon D7100. I probably have shot 20 pictures with the Sony and it's just laying around. Its like brand new with original box and 16 Gb. card and extra battery. Check out its specs and get back to me.
If you can give me a good reason, I'll wrap it up and send it to you for free. I'm assuming that you will really use it and post pictures on the hog.

These were taken handheld on a boat in rough seas after a storm from a fair distance, heavily cropped and sharpened so I know technically they're not that good, BUT in terms of how the whale is rotated, etc is there a clear winner?

In #2 the water still nicely envelopes the beast.

Hi counpsych - When I first started with DSLRs a few years ago I got the same lens - it was date coded 2005. It took really decent pictures but required a shutter speed of at least 1/250 minimum. So, if I didn't have a tripod to use with it, my picture taking opportunities with that lens were somewhat limited.

Last fall I bought the 70-200 IS "L'" and there is a world of difference - I use it often and just love the results - it is my favored lens. The pictures are, generally, tack sharp and I have had good results at speeds as slow as 1/15 (although I do try to use faster shutter speeds if possible). The IS factor is critical. Also the IS lens is date coded 2011 and, from what I have read, Canon's glass for the newer "L" has been upgraded making great

improvements on image quality. I am on a fixed income so price is a factor. I bought both lenses used from a respected retailer. Used prices: non-IS was $550 and the IS was $900.

Bottom line - overall, the IS greatly out performs the non-IS. The non-IS does give high quality results but its usability is somewhat diminished without IS. If you decide to buy used, keep the date codes in mind.

Great info as I am looking to upgrade from my digital point and shoot to a good dslr camera with a couple of lenses.
