I love the raw information within this group. Very much appreciated. I have a lot to think about. My 24-105 does well. In fact, I'm going to use it next week for a family shoot on a deserted bridge I discovered near here. I think I'll load up the 70-300 and see if beyond 100 is a good return too. My pops only ever used a 50 on his film 35. Again, many thanks!

I have shot professional portraits for over 35 years. My favorite mm range for portraits was 100-200. So your 70-300 would do. Shoot wide open as you want the back ground to go out of focus. Distance your subject from the back ground also, do not have them up against it. Focus on the eyes.
One of the most miss understood beliefs in photography is that a 50 mm lens captures what the human eye sees. This is so WRONG. All of my photographer instructors have said the lens that comes closest to what the human sees WITH BOTH EYES OPEN is a 35 mm lens.
IMHO, my favorite portrait lens was the 70-200 mm 2.8 lens. Loved that lens for portraiture.
I have shot professional portraits for over 35 yea... (show quote)

Great information, thanks!

Taking yall's lead and advice and looking at the 85mm lenses from Canon, I see the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens, Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens. Aside from the obvious price on the 1.8 is there a deficiency that can't be seen?

I'm a Canon guy - 5D IV and 5Drs I shoot mainly landscapes but recently, I'm gravitating towards some portrait but cant decide if this is something I want to do. Current lenses are 70-300, 100 -400, 24-105 and 16-35. All are L.

I have often heard that a 50 MM lens replicates what the human eye sees. I have been considering adding new glass but am needing guidance from the experts. What are ya'll thoughts?

TIA,

Nick

I think he has valid points. Our parks are abused and fragile areas overused.
He takes time and effort to get his photos.
I imagine he feels some sense of ownership. He doesn’t want to “setup a shoot” for the masses.
Very valid point made was that everyone is free to do some research on their own.
Maybe come up with a fantastic shot they earned.

Ownership? Balderdash! We, as American Citizens ALL OWN the parks. Those of us here that treck into the woods, deserts or mountains and find an area, item, scene or other vision through the lens take time and effort. If I'm out pursuing what I love with my equipment how is it different than a mountain climber and Everest? Sorry, I just don't buy the theory behind the claim.

Truth be told, he's most likely afraid someone else might shoot it better, clearer and more composed.

If, the new body from Nikon can use your present glass, it's a no brainer. If, your present glass will not work, toss up. BTW, I love my 5Dsr.

Just a thought, post an image your not happy with. Also, a T5i and the kit lens are very capable paired together but remember, those EF-S kit lenses will not work with a full frame sensor as memory serves me.

Surrounding items within eyes sight influence what your brain registers as green as it does with all other colors regardless. Vision imparities may also play a part in your issue. Color Blindness (red-green) affects near 8% of the male population.

I have the very same lens. It's pretty good but at about 350 it doesn't perform as well as I originally hoped.

There are three parameters that change depth of field (dof): focal length of lens, f/stop, and distance from lens to the focus point. There are several free apps that you can download for your computer or cell phone. I use one all the time to ensure that I get the dof wanted. Play around with the app and you'll get a good idea of what you need to do.

I'm always amazed, being a member on ten or more different sites, that so many folks never take the little extra step to include the name of, or the site address and what phone, i.e. android or iPhone or Win8.1, these apps are.

Sad

I haven't nailed it down yet....there are lots of good places where a social security check goes a long way.

Mexico is one, and Ecuador is another one...but there are many.

Hmmmm, best do your homework on those two. Dollars going a long way is just a small speck in the continuum of life - freedom from oppression and ideologies and government needs to be at the top of your selection. Your SS check will do little to sustain you should the government you have to live under tends to dislike immigrating Americans and decides you're a threat to their future.

A legible sign would help.

Help do what? Identify it? It's a hundred years old, what more of an ID does one need? What is being discussed here is the same condition that exist all over the world. We, as the human race have become complacent and far to busy with life to smell the coffee - we just want to drink it and be gone.

Slow down, way down. Enjoy life - LIVE IT, experience it NOW for tomorrow, it may be too late.

Loose a child as I have, walk in my shoes and you will understand.
