CYCLES OF TIME WITH ITS ALLIES

I believe man is conditioned to short and medium time cycles. TV has conditioned our children to act as though there will be occasion to pee every fifteen minutes with no loss of life’s plot; that hourly the whole subject of life is apt to change; and that all drama can be resolved within an couple of hours or less. Real life gives us seasons that repeat every year with predictable effects. Our lifetime reveals that change comes slowly but if we live long enough we can certainly remember that there was a big difference along that road by the shopping center ... or grandfather’s old farm place. But geologic time evades our comprehension. We can observe the depth of the Grand Canyon or see the effect of wind and time on such a magnificent edifice as this ... but we are at loss as to how long has elapsed between the wafting away of each tiny grain of dust that has resulted in the carving and sculpturing of this mystical edifice. We can only stand, look and gawk! Fantastic evidence that our human grasp of time cycles is very limited. Great pictures and deep lesson of life!

When traveling kinda back roads in Tennessee, it's possible now and then to encounter some actual natural truth. This looks like a Jersey momma that we met on some small mountain back road somewhere near Cades Cove. Of course she was "OUT", but nevertheless she seemed to have a purpose and knew where she was going. All of us vehicle drivers slowed to stop or near stop and let her continue. And 'of course' she owns this highway whenever she's walking on it. It was we people that caused problems. She might be getting back to a calf. Who knew. [ahem].

Okay guys, it's obvious it has worked long enough to be forgiven a failure by now . . . but I still don't know a faster, simpler way to open Windows and go to work! ahem.

We are getting fancy. Technology is great. But as we molt (read 'evolve' if you like) into our new environments we also experience a lot of frustrating malfunctions with our new innovations. I still take my hat off to old solutions that continue to work! Here is mine for the day.

I have also learned to do that. I have two '5000' series Nikons that I use during the same projects of shooting wild flowers, scenes, and insects. Now I have two 32GB Sandisks, labeled with felt markers "D5100" and "D5200". I don't even mix these between cameras anymore. I suspect that the D5100 cannot display some shots made by the 52. I have also started renaming files immediately after downloading into a "WorkShop" folder, editing and before moving them to a more specific folder. Thanks for your comment . . . especially the item concerning the derivation of the 9999 limit. Now I know. Very much appreciated stuff.

Moose, I love it! I dig it. I'm copying and saving it. I too once started a little book of "Sayins`". I think I may have lost it now. Don't that just rot ya socks!

Thank you.

Thanks to all. I've studied all suggestions and appreciate your responses. I did, in fact, by a 3TB Western Digital "My Book" external hard drive. Now to learn how to review, discard bad pics, on several years of DVD's, and save them to the new hard drive. I figure at least a two year project in the making. Must decide to continue with my limited (but fast) free "Picasa" editor or resolve to learn another more complex program such as Adobe. The whole project will certainly keep me off the streets at night. Thanks all.

I change the prefix in my Nikons from default My D810 file Name is D8C and my D7100 is D7K and since I put each days shoot in a folder with name of the shoot & 1he # of shoot for that month Jan Folder is 01 1st shoot in that folder is 01-xxxxx, next is 02-xxxxx etc.

Thanks, mborn. Sounds like winning logic BUT, I don't think in my D5000 series DX cameras the prefix is changeable. D5100 and D5200. My macro work with living insects is sometimes at ground level. I require the flip out, articulated live view screen. Haven't found an FX nor any full frame with that complete feature that I can afford.

Bugz, I think you mean "SanDisk", not "ScanDisk".
ScanDisk is a Microsoft diagnostic utility.

It all really comes down to being organized and thinking ahead. As I create a new folder for every card-to-computer transfer, I never run into problems related to duplicate file names. And after I edit an image file, I save it to a brand new file name anyway. Simple, but effective.

Yes! SanDisk. My bummer. Thanks.

Thanks sincerely to all of you. I've suspected the need to 'customize' the file names. Now I know better what to do. This event certainly drove home the rule of "six 'P's" . . . Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Thanks again.

One’s failure to comprehend complexity in matters should not embolden cheeky rude response. I appreciate your view and suggestion, Bram boy . . . why did it spark a wonder of a link to the "Stoker" lineage?

All points taken well and deserving consideration in the niche of comprehensive hi-tech photography (as it was certainly intended); and equally well understood that as I had walked (at 79 years old) the quarter-mile to that dark aircraft hanger with only small windows up 30 feet high where I found the WWII Glider aircraft; a WWII rare 'Ford' Jeep; and lots of other flying, running, and restored artifacts . . . I so much appreciated my 800--1200 ISO that captured very acceptable images that I would not have gotten at 100 without a tripod or lighting I did not have with me. Good stuff Rongnongno, as you presented it.
