I have successfully used Nikon AF lenses on Nikon D750 and D90.
I have also successfully used Nikon Series E lenses on the D750. Manual metering and focus, but they work well enough.

I have two, one from 1973, and one from the'50s. I carry the 1973 one in my bag all the time. I referenced it yesterday.

Many Linux distributions are not hard to install. I have installed Ubuntu and it was fairly easy. There are instructions.
