i have no idea? might you be assuming just a little too much here? you don't even know me or my past. you think you are the only proud vet on this forum who has sacrificed untold years of service for what you believe in? again, i only say this with a smile on my face. i'm not trying to be malicious in anyway. however, i think i just need to turn off my computer for another few weeks, then return with a related photography question. i truly wish you well, and thank you for your service. i'm getting too old for this internet stuff too. just glad i can laugh it off and move on. good luck.

Yep. You know what they say about assumptions. My friend, if you are a Vet (and I now assume that you are), then you have my greatest admiration and RESPECT, and thanks. No offense meant, and no offense taken. You know of where I speak. No words are needed. Vaya con dios mi amigo.

Very interesting, you join us on April 2 and on April 4 you post that you enjoy the “ego boost” from the members here at UHH then again on April 4 you post that UHH is a friendly group and you are enjoying it and that you like the positive feedback. Today UHH is nothing more than a bunch of cyber bullies. I looked through your posts and I couldn’t find one instance where anyone had a negative comment toward you let alone anything that even came close to resembling bullying. So I read your blog and you tell us we should “man up” when faced with cyber bullies but you choose to cut and run. I must confess I’m a bit confused but of course will respect your decision. I wish you well and do hope you find whatever it is you’re searching for.

Thank you Pepper. It wasn't about me (someone else). It appears that my post is confusing and self-serving, not my intent. Probably best to let it rest. But thank you for your well wishes. Steve

if you are set on leaving, then please don't pull the bully card. give us the respect you say we deserve. you are leaving because you are old and tired of cyberspace. i totally understand this. if you look at how frequently i post, you'll see that i visit this site only occasionally myself. i was encouraged when i saw a new member giving clear useful information, and now you are pulling the plug because someone allegedly bullied you. if i thought saying i wanted you to stay had any impact on your decision, i would do it. so i tried a different approach and immediately got labeled as a backhanded bully---funny really. unfortunately, i won't be leaving so these folks will just need to learn how to avoid my posts. you lost everything, huh? well, join the club. i think it's a crime on vets, but that's another thread.

TOTALLY AGREE HISTOGRAM. And yes the Vets got screwed, and continue to get screwed. And you're right again when you say it's the cyber-world I'm sick of. Absolutely. And yes, millions of people have lost everything (many of them were my customers and friends ... and I am heartsick about it). As Wendy said, sometimes you just have to remove yourself from a toxic environment. Not UHH per se, but social media as a whole. I'm just not equipped to handle it anymore. I really do think most of UHH is great, I just don't have the patience to deal with the minority. And it wasn't me they were bullying, I can take care of myself ... it was someone who couldn't, or wouldn't, stand up for themselves. I'm going away now guys. Maybe the bullies will re-think their attitudes, but I'm not optimistic. I do wish you all the best.

But you see, this is what you find in all walks of life, all professions, everywhere. One can not escape it. It seems that many people must become bigger and better at others' expense. Whether it is racism, bullying, and so on.

If the environment poisons you, then you need to remove yourself from it. But most of our 'environments' are poisonous to some extent or another. I remove myself from caustic relationships and have divorced my self from bad girlfriend relationships, as well as a caustic marriage. I found this forum to be disheartening at times. Not in terms of people attacking me, but how they attacked others. I have trouble with that and often came to their defense. But I ignore it most of the time now, unless they are being particularly mean to someone.

I just want the good, search out the good and brush aside the negative. I do this because I keep learning so much.

I do understand how you feel, and as I said before, I felt that way too, in the beginning, but had a change of attitude and am glad I stayed around! I wish you the very best!!!

Wasn't my intent Wendy. You were very generous with your comments. And I admire your photography. I have posted replies to other comments. My post was offensive to many, it wasn't aimed at the majority, but rather the minority.

you claim to be a marine? no doubt you stood before real bullies in real combat in your day, and now you are going to let a few invisible cyber bullies dictate your actions? you are just another commercial banker to me.

No claim about it. I was, and proudly so. Sergeant Stephen F. Dennstedt, USMC 215667. Dates of service 1965 - 71 (Vietnam 1967 - 68 inclusive of the Tet Offensive 1968). You have no idea.
I lost everything as a commercial banker trying to protect and serve my customers: family, job, house and retirement. I live the simple life of a broke (expat) photographer in Mexico. I fought the system and lost.

I meant no disrespect ... though I can see how it could be perceived as such. Apologies for that. For the most part you have an OUTSTANDING group of warm, caring and supportive people. However, you have a small minority that taint your objectives. I am too tired to engage with them further. I 'truly' wish you all the best.

Dennstedt....I read your blog. We need somebody like you to stick around and let somebody know when they're being rude or a bully. Keep 'em in check. The main photo forum is not for any heavy critique. It's for people to post their photos. If they want critique they ask for it. In the section about Introducing Yourself a brand new poster downloaded a nice photo. Wouldn't you know somebody would have to do a critique!! So, don't leave. This place is full of all kinds of people....including a lot of good ones.

Thank you very much. I really appreciate your nice comments. It's me, just too old and cranky for social media. Most of you folks are terrific (I really mean that). I just can't read the negative stuff without wanting to engage (as many of you want to engage with this negative post), but I just don't have the energy anymore. Not trying to be offensive, but obviously I have been. Just be kind to one another ... PLEASE.

Answer a post about bullying with a backhanded attempt at bullying... nice move!!!

'Sincerely' was not the intent. BTW, this commercial banker lost everything: family, job, house, retirement and health. Living in Mexico as an expat photographer. I was just trying to point out that you have an incredible group at UHH, and to let a few bullies taint it is a shame. I know there is no solution, it is the times we live in. I truly wish the good folks of UHH success and enjoyment with their shooting. Photography is the BEST.

So sorry to see you go. Bullies are everywhere, so do not give in to them.

It's not so much giving in, as not wanting to spend my remaining years dealing with it. I have fought the good fight, but now it's finally time to settle into old age and avoid the conflicts. Just tired of it all. The social media thing just depresses me. Just me, old and cranky, and missing the values of the past. Most of you folks on UHH are absolutely GREAT. I just don't have the energy to deal with the jerks anymore. Wish I did. Happy shooting, and enjoy your photography ... IT IS THE BEST HOBBY OR PROFESSION IN THE WORLD.

It wasn't you my friend. Sent you a PM. Better off this way, I just don't have the time or patience for it anymore. There are a lot of people who want to learn the craft. I just dropped out of a forum for Professionals also, for exactly the same reason.

In less than a week I have decided to leave the UHH site. Although I have already met very nice folks, most especially my VN Vet comrades, the negative sours the positive. For those that welcomed me with open arms ... THANK YOU ... for the Cyber-bullies ... you should be ashamed and go away. For an in-depth explanation click on this link: http://dennstedt.wordpress.com/2013/04/08/cyber-bullies/

Adios mi amigos. And best wishes from an old fool in Ciudad de Merida, Yucatan, MX.

I bought the Canon f/2.8 70-200 along with a 2x extender for my trip to East Africa. On safari I used the f/2.8 with extender almost exclusively and the results were superb, particularly in low light and, of necessity, hand-held. In the intervening years I acquired a 5DII as well as a Canon 24-105 for my (excuse the expression) walk-around lens. This combination has served me very well in my travels and general photography pursuits.

I totally agree with your comments.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to give this person a real and personal response instead of posting some link and sending him on his merry way, yes i know its been discussed many times here . My ? is whats the law that makes you read every post and that when someone ask for personal exeriance they don't deserve some one's time and atten.

Well, thank you. I've been shooting for a lifetime, but I'm getting old now, and I find it difficult to navigate through the various threads on a forum. I always appreciate it when someone gives me a break and provides an answer. I am not denigrating anyone else's comment, I just know that I need a helping hand once in a while. And I absolutely LOVE talking to the new young (and not so young) photographers coming up (some with extraordinary talent and/or potential). It's satisfying to give back a little, I've been given so much in my life. I shoot professionally, but it was a long road to get there ... and I would like to think maybe we can help others along the way. Hell, I ain't no saint (that's for damn sure), but a helping hand never hurt anyone. Thank you for your comment(s).

You need to practice hand holding the long zoom ( 300 mm) and maybe use a tripod.

I happen to have the Tamron 70-300 and get crystal clear pics with it.

Note that it is easy to blur a pic when you don;t hold the camera steady and breathe at the same time you shoot !

I agree. The Tamron SP 70-300mm Di VC USD is a stellar lens. I shot with it for over a year. The only thing that I've found better (in that range) is my Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM prime lens. Value for money spent? The Tamron is number one. But if you can step it up another $600 USD the Canon 400mm prime is almost perfection, and its IQ is nothing short of stunning. It's the best BIF lens I've ever used.
