My wife and I were there in late August in 2022 for 12 days and used M43 PL 12-60 & PL 50-200 with a 1.4 TC along with a Sony RX100 VII and she her Oly 12-100. Those lenses proved to be all we needed. Your 24-120 & 50-300 will be perfect. Have a great trip!

KEH offered me $140 for a seldom used Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens but when they inspected it they said there was fungus in the lens and offered me $15 for it. I told them that I had not seen any fungus in the lens and to please return it to me. They did, I subsequently sent it to MPB for a $100 offer and they ended up evaluating it at $95 so I took it. No mention of fungus. At the same time I sold KEH a D750 and some other lenses for higher prices than MPB offered. I think KEH probably decided they had too many of the Tamron 90’s in stock and low balled the original offer, but to say the reason was fungus was a stretch. I buy and sell much more often with MPB but Robert’s has treated me fairly as well.

I have the OM-1 & Olympus 300mm f4 with both 1.4 & 2.0 TC’s, original 100-400mm Panasonic, Panasonic G9 & G9 II and many Pano Leica and Oly Pro lenses. I also have a Nikon D500 & Nikon 500mm PF f5.6 lens. I came to M43 for a travel camera system and I am so glad I did. It is much lighter than my past D750’s and full frame gear and I would not want to carry that weight again at age 79. But I also like to photograph birds, wildlife and bugs and the I can’t decide if I like the DSLR Nikon or OM-1 kit better despite all the mirrorless advantages and great stabilization of the Oly. You would not be unhappy with the Oly kit but you might want to try a Nikon 500mm PF lens on your D500 before changing or getting a new system as it weighs about 85 ozs and balances very well vs 73 ozs & 77 with the TC 1.4 for the Oly kit and the image quality is hard to beat. You can get the 500 PF for $2000 at MPB. I didn’t go with the Z8 or 9 because I wanted less weight. You can spend a lot of money changing to M43 system but at my age, for what I do it was the correct choice, I just can’t let go of the 500 PF yet. Good luck!

It’s actually a very common practice in photo journalism. The AP has very strict
Guidelines on what can and cannot be edited. For instance a photo can be cropped but people cannot be edited out. They don’t allow for a lot of leeway.

The point is that the photog is trying to capture an image that is documentary, not necessarily artistic. Al thought the good ones often do both. RAW simply requires too much editing and allowance for interpretation of the image.

A good example was years ago Time had a photo of OJ Simpson that they intentionally darkened his face with deep shadows to make him look more sinister. There were significant ethics issues involved and they clearly editorialized a photo through editing.

As usual a blanket statement, without context, is not often accurate or helpful. In this case the news agencies need accuracy and raw does not help. In some ways it hinders.

Often field photogs are uploading their pics on the fly. Others may be downloading them, determining what goes to publication etc. in addition They simply don’t have time to mess with each photo. Just like some wedding photogs and others. Time is money. And they’re on a very tight schedule.

I shoot almost exclusively RAW the latitude it provides my amateur skills. The news agencies are trying to achieve the exact opposite. Now if they could achieve neutrality and accuracy in reporting we’d all be better off.

I’ve done a good bit of business with MPB, both buying & selling, and they have been overall an excellent vendor. I would say that UsedPhotoPro (Robert’s) is in the same category but their selection appears to be more limited. I’ve never returned a purchase with either of them.

Have you considered adding the Faroe Islands to your trip? When we finished a tour of Iceland two years ago we flew to the Faroes and self auto toured for five days. It was one our best travel decisions. The photo opportunities were amazing. You can drive to many of the islands via under water tunnels. We stayed in Torshavn at the Hilton Garden Inn which was just outside Torshavn with easy access to roads leading to other parts of the islands. We were just as enthusiastic about the Faroes as Iceland and that is saying a lot as you know. You’ve got great choices.

The unfortunate truth about tripods is that you get what you pay for. An old joke is that you can get a tripod that is lightweight, sturdy and inexpensive (pick any two).

The other truism is that stated weight ratings are absolutely meaningless.

To answer your question, CF is lighter than aluminum, and more expensive. But a CF tripod assembled to meet a low price point can still be junk (ask me how I know).

I am not sure if this site is still testing new products, but thecentercolumn site has tested numerous tripods and lists the specs and results. They have a separate listing for travel tripods. A surprisingly strong performer was the brand Leofoto, a relatively inexpensive copycat brand that seems to make good products.

Good luck with your search, and enjoy your trip!

I agree with the Leofoto suggestion. Mine is sturdy, light and tall enough without a center column and it only costs me $289 several years ago. The whole kit weighs about four pounds including ball head and Acratech leveling bowl. I also have a new Heipi travel tripod, haven’t used it but seems well made and fairly sturdy.

About 15 months ago, I had a D-500 take a bath...i.e. partially submerged in water...Just for a laugh, I sent it to Nikon repair in NY, thinking they were going to tell me..."It's a nice paper weight"...3 weeks later, I had it back, fully cleaned, recalibrated. I also have used a place in Miami that does a lot of repair work for UPI, API, AFP on their equipment, I've had 2 bodies worked on there & they have access to all Nikon parts Southern Photo Repair 37 NE 167 St, Miami, 33162 (305)653-7355... Given the model of your camera & possible cost, it may be cheaper to go out on KEH.com, MPB.com & buy a good quality used one

I can’t recommend Southern Photo Repair in Miami. I had a very expensive and unpleasant experience with them several years ago. Others may have had a better experience but mine was totally time consuming, frustrating and costly. If Nikon’s repair is too high or they no longer will repair your D7200 the MPB or KEH suggestion is an alternative solution. Good luck.

Hello all, going to Italy mid- March for 2 weeks. What do you think would be the best lenses to take with me. Here are my current lenses; EF 16-35 F2.8, EF 70-200 F4, EF 50 F1.8, RF 100-400 F 5.6-8, and RF 24-105 F4-7.1. Will be mainly shooting the sites of Italy. Thanks in advance.

My experience from five trips to Italy is to take your 16-35 f2.8 & the 24-105. Your cell phone can supplement indoors when needed or just take a Sony Rx100 VII or similar and be happy with the convenience.

Nice photos. My wife and I visit there two or three times a year to take photos, do ancestry research and enjoy the varied dining experience. Some of my family were 1768-1777 Greek/Minorcan New Smyrna Colony members who fled to St. Augustine in 1777 to survive when the colony failed. The varied and somewhat unknown, even today, history is fascinating. Anyone interested in seeing a video of the New Smyrna Colony and Minorca can review my wife’s video at YouTube channel- lesdubb. Thanks for sharing.
