Thank you for that, unfortunately for Elements 8 you need a raw converter I think and therein lies my problem

I have a Nikon D3100 and photoshop elements 8.

I have spent hours trying to open raw files, I have followed instructions, watched you tube, read a book and I still can't open them.

I don't think I can take anymore, my brain has gone to mush!

I need a complete idiots step by step guide on open raw files. Please help.

I have just had a fantastic week in Wales with a visit to Skomer Island where the puffins are busy feeding their chicks. I probably took about 200 shots of puffins and got a few good ones. These are my 2 favourites.

I got the focus a bit wrong in no. 2 but I quite liked the outcome

Thanks Lesley i guess most of the credit has to come down to the equipment im using? these were shot using a canon 1D mkiv with a canon 300mm 2.8 mk2 lens. it was quite a dull day and raining slightly so the setting i used were ISO 320 F/2.8 1/1250 shot hand held. the lens is a fantastic piece of kit i would highly recommend but they're not cheap

Thanks for the info but you're being a little modest here. I think there was lots of skill and you happened to have great equipment

These are fantastic shots. I can never get this level of sharpness, how do you do it and can you tell me what your settings were.

Last year on the BBC there was a series of four programmes showing Yellowstone Park through the seasons. It looked like a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year. Each season had had its highlights.
Have a great trip

Having trouble deciding on a "one lens only". I'm just an amateur
so the Nikon 18-200 is too pricey for my skill level. So, looking
at Tamron 18-270 Or Sigma 18-200 or similar, which is advisible? I have a Nikon D7000. Larry

As a relative beginner I find the Tamron 18-270 really easy to use and brilliant for holidays. This is an example of a picture taken from a canoe in Costa Rica. I had no time to set it up so as you can see I got lucky, The shot was taken at 1/320 f/6.3 and 270mm

Thank you everyone for your help and encouragement here. This is fantastic for learners like me. Mind you the technical stuff is quite hard going sometimes

It's not something to get rid of...it's a byproduct of an out of focus background and the particular "look" that your lens gives to blurry backgrounds; the round light circles are made from lighter areas or something reflecting light like raindrops or something. You shot it at f/7.1 and so the background isn't as blurry as it should be to make the circles of light look better...if it were more blurry they'd be more pleasing looking.

You can fix it....but really, it's just the way it is when you have light peeking through your green bushes.
It's not something to get rid of...it's a byproduc... (show quote)

Ok so if I had shot this at f/4.5 would it have improved the shot?

A good example of bad bokeh.
Bokeh is the quality of out of focus areas of the photos, most easily seen in the highlights.

18-270 (is it a Tamron?) lens set at 110mm @ f/7.1

Not a mirror lens, but pretty similar effect.

Yes it's a Tamron
I've never heard of bokeh, I'm certainly learning a lot on this site :)

There may be a very obvious answer to my problem but as I'm fairly new to photography I have no idea what has caused this.

On a recent holiday to Costa Rica I photographed this little chap and as you can see there is stuff that looks like frog spawn or bubbles above his head. Can anyone tell me what it is and how can I avoid it in future

Great shot, saw it as it returned to base as it flew over Peterborough. Unfortunately I was walking in woodland and could not get a clear shot as it passed over.

Thank you. It did three laps of the old Brooklands race track and was only 1 minute late so I had lots of time to set up the shot. :)

One of my lady customers is the daughter of Dr. Barnes Wallace and her house in New Smyrna Beach has every photo of the episode and all the plans and documents of the Dam Busters story. A fabulous collection but should be in a museum somewhere>

Perhaps one day she might send them to Brooklands.
