This is silly information. I use to use Canon and had one of their top end fast zooms. The lens became locked to the body and went in for repair to the toon of $300 plus dollars. They sent back the repaired lens and the part, a cheap metal ring from the front of the repaired lens. As the NASA astronaut said, as he tossed a Nikon into space after jamming on the third frame, "So much for Japanese junk, hand me the Hasselblad". For me it is not a Hasselblad it is Leica. I have the Leica 8.5cm f 1.5 lens produced for the German military in 1932, that lens and mount is fine as it approaches it's 100 year and still functions perfectly. The mount could fail but you would need to hit it several times with a number three ball bean hammer to get it to fail.

You get what you pay for, I use my Leica lenses on the Sony mirrorless body and have no desire to go back to Canon or the other cheaply made junk cameras. Yes, I gave that super toy lens to a guy I know along with the Schnider zoom lens made for the Leica camera body. All just junk gear.

Canon defines the professional market for interchangeable lens cameras, now for 30+ solid years. Your random detail-free anecdote means zero when considering the market share of a company that dwarves all competition, bigger than the next two manufacturers combined. Moreover, Canon is not even the brand(s) involved in the OP's post, further highlighting the random nonsense of your silly reply.

Here is an example using a color image. The difference (the devil) is in the detail.

The reason for the difference is that the original 24MP image uses each RGB pixel from the raster image to create a single JPEG pixel for the 24MP JPEG. When going from 6000 pixels wide to about 2000, each JPEG pixels is now built from about 9 pixels (3x3). This necessarily changes the level of detail, the clarity and the apparent sharpness.

It is impossible to avoid a difference.

I still question the software involved ...

The differences in the pixel resolution make for differences at the pixel-level, so looking there and finding differences doesn't matter much. But, the 'full-screen' view should be the same. When I flip between your two images, differences in the pillars and fence details of the houses behind the fountain visually 'flip' as I flip between the two images. That doesn't happen in my LR images, but I'll have to search for something similar to now specifically test.

Maybe you weren't looking for the specific differences I found.

I looked at the details of two of the images in this demonstration, seeing differences I wouldn't expect to see, certainly not differences I've found in my own resized images.

1. They were resized during the Export step at the same 80% compression.

2. I don't use Lightroom or any other editor. I'm pretty sure that the same thing would happen with other programs.

3, 4. These images were captured with a monochrome camera. Color space is irrelevant.

5. the only editing was to move the Exposure and Shadow level. The file format was never changed.

6. Capture One, like Lightroom, is entirely non-destructive. There is only a raw file and a sidecar saved in the session.

All three files were saved at 80% compression and, other than resizing during the Export step, the only difference will be the number of raw pixels used to create an RGB pixel.

When I printed the three via Epson Print Layout at 7x10.5", the ppi values are 574, 390 and 195. I used Epson's Advanced B&W Photo type setting on Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte. Paper ICC profile was no involved.

This is not a generalization. It is a specific example of a finely detailed B&W image. The phenomenon shown here is not likely to be as visible in a less detailed image. A color image would also make it less apparent.

Until consistent results can be created across multiple softwares and varied JPEG compression settings, I wouldn't consider the matter 'settled', not for me at least . In my own experiments looking at other issues, I know I've run experiments that would have overlapped with these results / demonstrations, but I never reached the same findings. I looked at the details of two of the images in this demonstration, seeing differences I wouldn't expect to see, certainly not differences I've found in my own resized images.

Paul, why not take all the comments you've made on this post and list them on a new post to aid and abet those with GAS? You could title it, "Why You MUST Buy A New And Better Camera".

Diane, I shoot with (relatively) older cameras and mostly older lenses. I needed to revisit your OP and see if I could determine the original idea. Most of what I have to 'say' on UHH is sarcastic support of the truthiness of most of UHH's fundamental ideas, especially that new cameras make for better photos and better photographers.

But, your topic and decision 'drivers' really doesn't match the loaded words of your post title. Yes, I recognize we can't go back and re-write aspects of UHH posts after the initial hour. My understanding of your post and subsequent discussion is a need to select new (different) equipment that 'better' matches your physical abilities and evolving desires on how to enjoy both travel and your photography while traveling. I've encountered some of the same questions in my own travel and photography decisions.

Although I haven't purchased a new digital (nor film) camera body in now 8-years, I can see how the new releases across the industry continue to expand the many and varied options of how to generate awesome images in a personally (individually) enjoyable method.

I also enjoy yanking the chains of a wide swath of the UHH population who are clearly threatened by new mirrorless technology, especially those who deny -- against all visual and anecdotal evidence -- the superiority of even the entry-level MILC models. In my oddball way, I'm supporting the results of your journey into mirrorless. And, I look forward to the results.

Same original file.

Looking at these examples, I'd need to know more details:

1, How were these images resized? Was the original used to resize the two (three?) subsequent outputs?

2, The images all report Capture One 23. If you resize the export from LR Classic with the same image, can you create the same 'differences'?

3, The images don't report a colorspace. If this was changed to sRGB, does the behavior of the JPEGs change?

4, How was the original image captured?

5, How was the original image edited? How many times and where was the file format changed, Tiff, JPEG, ect?

6, Does Capture One work from the original in a non destructive manner, follow-up to Q1, above? Or, do you have to process / reprocess the edited file to create more versions?

Your demonstration is not my experience, but I use different tools. Therefore, I fear the idea presented can be traced to different causes, rather than the generalization presented.
