Canon auto focus for the most part is shut off on the lens but i Don't think that is what the issue was. I think the shutter speed was too slow. Its pretty easy when starting out to shoot on auto and not realize that the shutter speed is slow if your not accustomed to looking at the light meter. Im sure she will get it in time.

If you buy one and don't like it at least you are not out a lot of money and probably could re sell and get most if not all you money back. Option 2 would be to look for a decent lens on ebay used. I bought my Sigma 170-500 for just under 500.00. Have seen a few for sale?

Take a deep breath clear your mind work with what you have. Most of all have some fun with it. If the mother is paying for it try to get what her vision is show her what works and what wont most of all keep her happy if she is paying for it. Personally I dont charge family or friends and they are always happy.

I shoot nikon and canon...and my advice would be that if he has a collection of pentax lenses......stick with pentax.

great photographs come from great photographers.

upgrade to a new pentax and spend your time shooting and learning.

changing to canon or nikon is not going to make him better.

stick with pentax.

I have a friend that has an older sony dslr.....his photos are so great.
I can shoot a photo from my best stuff and come out equal, but not better.....and i have spent 10 times what he has.

if i had to guess, i would say it's 30% the equipment and 70% the photographer!

Is what I do is shoot several then choose the one I like....One of the greatest things about shooting digital is it only costs pennies to shoot a bunch of photos. Dont be afraid to try something new. It wont cost much if you mess a shot up.
