Dennis,
On a side note: Nov 11th is Veterans Day. It's Nov 10th that's the Marine Corps Birthday. Unless the recruiter lied about that too. Semper fi.
Nice photos, Bernie. I especially like the first two.

I rented a fast, wide angle lens to shoot the aurora. It was money well spent. Advice about wool socks, hand and foot warmers very good. You will need several layers of clothes -- an 800-fill down "sweater" (Patagonia makes them) should be one of them. Hardly any weight and no bulk, but WARM. In addition to the socks etc. I had Arctic boots and can't imagine going without them. It all means big heavy luggage but you will be very glad to have it. Temps when I was there were between -35 and -54, not counting wind chill. Good idea to wrap your tripod legs in foam. You can use duct tape and cut it all off later. By the way, your camera will "see" the aurora better than you will, (brighter and clearer) so shoot, shoot, shoot, even if you think it isn't real impressive. You might be pleasantly surprised later. Wish I was going again. Good luck and happy shooting. Miss Charlie
LoneRangeFinder,
Thank you for your explanation of a 50 vs 35mm prime. I appreciate your taking the time to educate me. Charlie
Well, if you see me out and about in Europe, I'll be easy to spot. I'm not one of the 95%. I'm all for whatever floats your boat, though. To each his own. Looking forward to your shots. My husband and I are headed to eastern Europe for our 30th.

On my cropped sensor cameras, I find it has less use than a 35mm prime....
Oops, quoted the wrong one. So again, as one on the beginner end -- Why?

no matter what kind of photography I'm doing I always have my 50mm in my camera bag. When in doubt take your 50 out LOL
For those of us on the beginner end of the spectrum -- why?
I'm thinking most people don't go to Octoberfest to take pictures. . .

Colmar is one of my favorite places and you captured it beautifully. Were the swans still around?
Very nice. What camera, what lens?
