Thanks for introducing me to John Free. It has been a long long time since I look a hard look at what I have been shooting and what I've been looking at. John Free has openen my mind to what I have been doing without really thinking. He has put into words the elements of images I've been working on. I now see what works and what doesn't in my photos. What is kept and what is cut out has always been a hard choice. I just took a look at images I've recently edited and now understand why it works, as it has a story to tell.

The year was 1967 and North of The 49th parallel the main talked about items were, Father David William Bauer and The TRAIL SMOKE EATERS plus Montreal's EXPO 67. What a wonderful time.

Father Bauer's proposal for a national team, which would re-establish Canada in international competition, while providing its players with the opportunity to acquire an education. In 1967 the team won the Centennial Tournament in Canada and a bronze medal in the 1968 Winter Olympics at Grenoble, France.

I had the original version with Decartes, entering the bar. I enjoyed the philosophical level of that joke.
Now you really took a left turn and cut a whole new level. Thanks, you had me going, I didn't see
the punch line coming. Now I know why the long face.

Thank you for mentioning Nancy Wilson. You were not the only young lad who fell in love with her way back then. I got out my vinyl copy of Tender Loving Care just to give it one more listen to and stare at the cover photo. The shrink wrap is sill on the album. Price tag reads $4.20 reduced to $2.60 because the shrink wrap was partly torn open. This was 1967 when I came upon this fabulous deal. As a high school student with a weekend job paying $1.05 an hour, it was still a no brained to snag the deal. The Inflation Calculator has $4.20 equal to $29.31 to todays rate. Today, I do not think I’d pay close to $30 for my music, but Nancy Wilson singing was well worth the price. Time to spin the disk and bliss out.

FROM: SNOPES.com (rumor has it)
True or not true, it still the thought that counts.
I think the fact that this bit of writing has been
moved on for 50 years speaks volumes.

FROM: The Library of Congress, Veterans History Project
Service History Note.
Roy Popkin served as Director of Public Relations at
the Brooklyn chapter of the American Red Cross throughout
World War II. During the Korean War, Popkin was the
Assistant Executive Director of the Brooklyn Red Cross Chapter.
In both capacities he was involved in such efforts as the
blood program and the Home Service.

Thank you Roy Popkin.

This particular account is not a true story, however, but rather a work of short fiction authored by Roy Popkin in 1964. It was published under the title "Night Watch" in the September 1965 edition of Reader's Digest and has subsequently been reprinted in a number of Chicken Soup for the ... Soul collections of inspirational pieces.

The mention of a "Mr. William Grey" and the plot point about the young Marine's having come to the hospital to inform Mr. Grey that his son had been killed in Iraq are more recent additions to this piece, tacked on by someone other than the original author to make the tale seem more topical and poignant. The original version concludes with the sentence "When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, I knew how much he needed me."
