Okay,So today my wife stated for the second time that she would like to get a better camera than what she has right now. She has a Kodak point and shoot. It works fine yet she knows what I have,Canon T4I, and thinks something like that would be better. The problem is her hands are very shaky.
So I pulled this camera out and told her to mess around with it to see what she thought about it. I put the 18-55 IS lens on it to see if she will even be able to handle it.
So if she ends up liking the camera yet maybe wants something not quite as heavy I'll probably have to get her the Canon SL1 of which is a mere 13 Ounces not including the lens.
Then will be able to let go of the T3 to someone else that will use it.

Good morning all.ole sarg,I actually had called tech support for Canon and their suggestion was that it might be the power board and I found out that anyone can get repair parts for their Canon camera.
I said that I would post the results of the trouble shooting and what was done to solve the problem?:)
WooHoo,Yippee, problem solved. Not overly simple because had to open the case.A friend of mine of whom is a bit more technically inclined than I ,as far as electronic trouble shooting and repair is concerned, What am I saying, much better at it than I am,Thanks John.
Well he found a ribbon cable inside the camera that just needed to be reset, unplugged then plugged back in. I should have asked if he would take pic's of the interior and of the repair yet I had not.
So anyway,He calls me and says ,Tim, listen to this, I hear a shutter clicking over the phone. This is so cool,no need to spend a dime on parts.
Don't know what would have caused the cable to become loose yet I don't care.He took some quick shots and found the camera works perfectly.
So I have to let you in on something. As I said earlier,I was planning on using the camera for a project to build a cooled Astro imaging Camera?
I purchased the camera on Ebay for $70.00 for just this intention and now feel it is worth way more than that so I made the purchase of a different camera for the build.

Can you use an externa power supply?

Try a NEW battery and clean the camera's battery contacts AGAIN.

I agree, post your results.

Good luck.

I have an exterior power source coming yet I do not believe that alone will take care of the problem as it makes the same connections inside the camera. I have had the batteries tested and they are fine. Even a battery with only half the available power should activate the small led that is near the battery compartment. I have cleaned all connection points on batteries and the camera. Thanks for your reply. When the problem is solved, I will most definitely post my results and cure. In the mean time, any other suggestions, other than returning to Canon? Like I said,we will be disassembling so any one out there that has done this to figure out a problem? Thanks

Definitly try what llamb said.

I also have a T3, so please be sure to post your solution.

So, what is a project camera? What is a cooled astro camera?

Thanks.

agilmore ,Thanks for your reply. I am into astro imaging and a friend and I are going to dismantle the camera and reassemble it into a project box that you can get from Radio Shack. Then attach a peltier cooler, like this,
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Thermoelectric-Peltier-Refrigeration-Semiconductor-Cooling-System-Cooler-fan-Kit/1988652866.html?af=ppc&isdl=y&src=Google&albch=Google&aff_short_key=6vYvMRFf&gclid=Cj0KEQiAm_eiBRCWgIfq9pK1nZsBEiQAGqUcSVmcuuii9-sia_DlbAn_H-QZ746T5pwNycVoBgKjmC4aAht88P8HAQ
which will cool the camera while taking long exposures of deep sky images. Cooling the camera reduces the noise that can be introduced into your images by the heating that will occur during long multiple exposures. Tim

Hello all,It has been a while since I have posted anything on here. I have a Canon T3 that is in excellent visual condition. It has absolutely no scratches scuffs or marks of any kind on it as it has never been dropped.
So as the title states it will not power on. The little LED will not even flicker when you open the battery door.
Okay before you say it,Yes the batteries are fully charged the battery door has the extension peg on it that actuates the Micro switch and all the contacts inside and on the batteries are clean.
I have googled this problem and have come up with no answer to the predicament or at least anyone that has had the problem solved and posted their results, how the problem was solved.
Now,this is going to be a project camera. Thinking of disassembling and turning into a cooled Astro camera by placing into a project box with a peltier cooler attached. I just would like to get the power issue taken care of prior to the project.
I would like to know if anyone here has had the problem and had it solved and if so ,other than sending it in for repair, or even if it was,I would like to know what was done to repair the camera. Thanks for taking the time to read. Remeber, I already have made sure that the batteries were fine and contacts cleaned. Thanks, Tim

astroturf,Very nice shot. What did you use to process the image? What were your settings for each, how long were the exosures? How many images did you use to stack them and did you use DSS?

Speedy,I actually have looked at that particular model and was thinking about getting it for my grandkids.
One thing though,I am saving up for a beefier Equatorial mount so putting off quite a bit of purchases for a while.

cjkorb, thanks for your inquiry. I installed a wall mounted propane heater made by Pro Com;10,000 btu if I remember right. I have it set to keep the temp inside between 40 and 50 degrees F, and go thru 4.5 gallons of fuel every 10 days, lasts longer with slighter warmer outside temps.

Hello all,
Again it has been quite some time since my last post here.
Thought i would add a small update. The observatory has been finished and yet I have not used it as much as I would have liked to.
I despise winter and can't handle the cold.
I thought i would at least show a few pic's of the interior of my new found retreat.

I tried my hand at some star shots last night, having missed the scheduled appearance of the ISS. Don't know if I got the time wrong, or the direction, but I was all ready for it and it didn't come. It would be difficult for them to 'reschedule' or 'reroute' it, so I guess I screwed up somewhere...

Anyway, I took multiple exposures of each set, planning to stack the images. Turns out the program I have doesn't align the star images, so you get a line of dots. I am posting my first test shot, of Orion coming up over a roof. The bright object to the lower left is Jupiter, and above that are the twins of Gemini. You will probably need to download it to see most of the stars.

Obviously, this isn't the look I was going for... Can anyone suggest a decent (cheap!) program which will align the star images? I know the roof in this particular shot will be an issue, but I have some better ones.
I tried my hand at some star shots last night, hav... (show quote)

Hello Bloke, My first question to you is,What mount were you using? Was it just a non tracking tripod? If so, all you will get is star trails. I apologize if you were already aware of this yet you did not state all your equipment used.

You know, this is part of the reason why I have been away from UHH for a while, the bickering and name calling that goes on here is ridiculous. Everyone has a right to their opinion.

Here are a few dumb questions. Is it possible to use a telescope to see any of the space junk on the moon? Is the junk located in a spot that's inaccessible to viewing? Are "store bought" telescopes powerful enough to accomplish this?

tscmath, there are no dumb questions. as far as viewing space junk on the moon, I have never been able to view any. Viewing thru earths atmosphere lends to the problem of limited eyepiece power usage.

Thanks cjkorb,it has been a fun project and still a work in progress. Soon I hope to have my scopes installed and using them once again.
Astro imaging is in the forefront of my thoughts for part of my reasoning for this build.
I have been tired of the set up and tear down time and now there will be no more than opening the roof and turning on the scopes. the reverse for shutting down.
I am getting very anxious to get started using it.

Hello to all.It has been a while since I have been on UH as I have been getting back into the hobby of astronomy. Here is an update as to what I have been up to.

Last year I made a purchase of my first telescope in a number of years,a Celestron Nexstar 8se. I have spent a bit of time getting used to the goto features on it and have to say that I love it.
Now my skies here where I live in Southeast South Dakota are located in an orange Zone. What that means is that there is light polution, yet I am still able to see the parts of the Milky Way.

I have a frind that lives 75 mles from me in Iowa. Him and his wife live on 6.5 acres in the country and the skies there are a bit darker than mine,Green zone and you can nearly see the entire Milky Way there.

Now ,he does not have a scope as he also got out of the hobby a while back. Yet I had asked him if I could buld an Observatory on their property, They agreed.
So the first thing I did was put in a permanent pier in an area selected by them.

Shortly afterwards,my son and daughter in law had made their first real home purchase and had a storage building that my son had built,14'x14'. I had asked him what he was going to be doing with it before they move. He said he did not want to leave it yet did not know what he was going to do.
I told him that I would take it off his hands for the money he owed me .
To make a long story short, I took it apart, piece by piece and transported it to it's new home and new life,at my friends house.
We used the material to build a Roll Off Roof Observatory. I do not have any shots of it on this computer so am sorry I cannot show it to you.

Moving ahead here a bit. Since then, I have made additional purchases of scopes. This year,my first purchase was of a Meade LX200 10" f/6.3 SCT. Now this scope has spent most of it's time in the Oservatory at my friends. I also made a purchase of a Celestron CR150 HD 6 ,6" Refractor and have been using it on a CG5 Advanced equatorial goto mount.

Moving ahead slightly, I had begun to tire of setting up the scopes then having to tear down when finished. After having 2 bouts of kidney stones this year and my wife being sick and spending time in the hospital on 2 occasions,1 for a slight stroke, I had decided to get the okay from here to build an Observatory here in our back yard. Woohoo thanks babe.

So this brings you up to date at what I have been up to. Oh and I have also been spending quite a bit of time on Cloudy Nights. I am sure many of you may be on there also.

Okay That is about it folks. I know there may not be many of you if any that were wondering ,where is tim57064? There is only so much time in the day and have been spending mine working on my OBS build and on Cloudy Nights and spending time with my Grandkids and then working, when needed on my son and daughter in laws home.

Here is an image of my new Observatory. It is not finished yet,I still have a few things to get done as I have been working on it for the past month, every day except when the clouds have opened up and dropped their abundance.

The pic I have chosen shows the roof of the observatory in the open position. I was just able to get that accomplished yesterday.
Tim
