So there I was minding my own business when Canon came knocking at my email box.

Canon: Listen Mark we know you've been eyeing up our EF 70-200 F4 L IS zoom lens for quite sometime and it just so happens we are celebrating our 40th anniversary so go ahead ... celebrate with us. BUT, we warn you ... here's the catch ... we are popping the balloons on June 16th. Happy Anniversary ... Love Canon x

So I thought ..... what's the harm in just taking a look ... I mean .. really! So with a list of authorised dealer websites in Canada I went "window" shopping .... just taking a look of course. Problem being, I find out that my favourite store is in on this conspiracy to extricate my money from my bank account .... $380.00 off and free shipping.

So I really don't know how it happened ...... I must have blacked out or something but somehow the lens ended up in my shopping cart. But that's where it stayed so I could muse over the situation ... oh come on ... don't tell me you have not done that before!! Liar liar pants on fire!

Anyway ... tonight I just happened to be musing at my favourite store when my wife looked over my shoulder and asked me what was in my cart. So I explained the horrible situation that these bad people had placed me in and that they were trying to entice me to spend money but I only had until the 16th to save $400 (with tax difference).

So my wife with all her wisdom simply stated that if I spent too much time thinking about it I could find myself really disappointed if they sell out at that price! You know I really love my wife's logic!

So you see it really is her fault that I am going to be waiting for the brown truck bringing my second piece of "L" glass.
So there I was minding my own business when Canon ... (show quote)

So good !!! Just wondering when she wants something more expensive and after much discussion on you saying I don't think so says " Well you gotta lens !!!" That's woman's logic.

Spent 2 years there in '97 to '99.
Cold & bleak this time of year as its coming into winter. Winds from Antartica are bl***y cold. I would suggest waterproofs for the camera and warm clothing. The wildlife is good, if you know where to go. Sometimes it means hanging off cliff tops to get the cormorants and shags. Turkey vultures are easily filmed as you can get quite close, Cara Cara are easily spooked and are usually out in the stick's. Penguins in numerous places. Gypsy Cove is a good place for Beach photo's, bit like the carribean, only colder.
With regard to hiring lenses, when I was there you only had what you took, none for hire, unless you get friendly with the RAF guys, who may help. You will find the locals very, very friendly, especially at Goose Green. Have a great time and enjoy.

You must go to the Argentinian Cemetary, its a sad but poignant place and eerie.

That's funny. With ours, it's only when someone enters the house. We had a chair delivered, and it came in a large box. When the dogs came into the room and saw the box, and ran to find something to bring to it.

We have 2 Border Collies and the young one does this, welcomes people who come to the house and then runs off to fetch a toy. She also opens the front to the postman and any person who knocks. We now have to keep our back and front doors locked.

I use my meter in studio to help set my lighting ratios, when out doors I use it less than half the time, usually in tricky light.

Same here Annie. I have the Sekonic Flashmate 308S and find it's well worth the money.

What is a general definition of a 'Professional' or 'Semi Professional' Photographer?

My wife's club started a photo competition last year for the members. It turned out so popular that it is now an ongoing event and the entries have been expanded to partners and friends.

Now it gets more complicated because there is one partner who says he is a 'semi professional' and used to do wedding photography although he said it was generally only for family and friends.

The latest person wanting to enter also claims he is a 'semi professional' but used to do photo shoots for magazines! He also appears highly competitive and determine to win - against amateurs!!!!

Hence the original question and should people who have done photography as a business be allowed to enter what is an amateur competition?

I was always under the impression that if you get paid, your professional, if you don't then amateur !!!! Therefore semi pro and pro are the same.

I loved the pics. I'm an Englishman living in Scotland since 1982 and am only 10 mins from Loch Lomond (Balloch end). There are some great veiws all around and when the weather is better will be out "havin' a go!!"
Only started photography last year and have learnt a lot from UHH comments and critiques.
I intend to try and tour the west coast because I believe there are plenty of opportunities.

Photoshop CS5 and/or CS6 is so much cheaper at Amazon and eBay than from Adobe. Is it a safe place from which to order? Also can older versions of software be sold and will it work for the new owner if the first owner had first used it to get the cheaper upgrade price on their upgrade?

I buy a lot on Amazon, both software and camera bits, lenses, books, tele's, etc and find that they are excellant. If you have a problem, Amazon will sort it out !!!

 I have a THINKLITE SPEEDLITE TT 560 but was told when i went to buy a "trigger'' for my canon 500 d that the trigger wont work with a 3rd party flash and I would need to purchase a Canon one . The Thinklite was approx. £40-50 - the canon £150-£350! you might have the same prob. with your camera

The Yongnuo 662C works well, I have four of them and wouldn't be without them

I understand about Santa dust.
Nikon's flashes are all I've ever used in recent years.
I can't afford for them not to work, so for me it's worth it to buy Nikon.

Not an endorsement, but I have read good things about the Yongnuo YN-568EX.

Appears to do just about everything the Nikon flash does for less money. Just remember, you usually get what you pay for.

I have aYongnuo 568EX for my Canon and found it well worth the money, it does the same and more that Speedlite(which I also have.)
Highly recommended.

I will be getting PSE 11 for Christmas and want to get a manual to go along. I haven't seen anything on this in the posts. I'm aware of the "Missing Manual" and the regular PSE guide by the company. Can anyone recommend which one, or another one, is the best one to have in the tool box? Thanks

They've done one for all previous versions, so I'm sure that Scott Kelby and Matt Kozlowski wii have a "Digital Photographers Guide to Elements 11" manual out by now, or soon. They are excellent for learning by doing with step by step instructions and copious photo examples. Recommend highly

I have a fairly elderly 430 EX speedlite and have been looking to get a second one that would work with it, new one as the main light, the 430 as the slave.

I have been looking for a 580EX MkII as I understand that this arrangement is possible with this combination without needing to buy extra bits. However, the 580 has been discontinued in the UK and has been replaced with the 600EX RT. My understanding is that the 600 will not trigger the 430.

My question therefore is, if I purchase the 600, what else do I need to have the 430 function as a slave or have I been misinformed / not understood what I have read? If I need extra bits what would be the best to buy?

I would suggest the Yognuo EX II range, they do the same as the Canon Speedlites but Brand New, a lot cheaper (less than a £100). I have a Canon 430 EXII and a YONGNUO YN568EX TTL High-Speed Sync Flash Speedlite for CANON Camera and use flash triggers YN622C and they work very well. It would be worth considering these alternatives.
best of Luck, it's a hard decision and you need to research, Yognuo will answer any questions through there website and are very quick in responding.

Have a look at the above, it will give you a start.
